Retiring Superintendent Joanne Benton Calls Wilmington Tenure 'The Pinnacle of My Career'

Wilmington's Superintendent of Schools will retire in the beginning of July.

Wednesday was the last day of classes for Wilmington students. It also marked another kind of goodbye.

The day was also the final time Superintendent of Schools Joanne Benton said goodbye to students, as her retirement becomes official at the beginning of July.

Though her retirement is just weeks away, Benton said it likely won't sink in until it becomes official.

"I guess it will probably sink in on July 3 when I wake up and don't have anything to do," said Benton lightheartedly. "Then I'll be worried."

Benton said the implementation of full-day kindergarten and the construction of the new Wilmington High School are among the highlights of her decorated career.

While Benton will be several months into retirement by the time Wilmington High School is ready for daily use, she said she is looking forward to being in attendance when students enter the building on February 24, 2015.

Though the superintendent has worked in several other school districts, she said Wilmington will always hold a special place in her heart.

"Of the four communities I’ve worked in, this has been the pinnacle of my career," Benton said. "I say this all the time and I’ll say it again. Wilmington honors its seniors and celebrates its youth. It’s a community that always comes together whether it be for a tragedy or a celebration. And that’s pretty special."
