Selectmen Urge Residents to Turn Out For St. Dorothy's Property Vote

Special Town Meeting will be held on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Wilmington Middle School auditorium.

At their Oct. 28 meeting, Selectmen took a moment to speak on the importance of turning out to vote at the Nov. 13 Special Town Meeting where residents will decide on appropriating funds for the purchase of property at 120 Main Street.

The 7.86 acre parcel is owned by the Archdiocese of Boston and is currently part of St. Dorothy's Parish.

Selectman Michael Champoux encouraged residents to turn out and vote in favor of the acquisition of the St. Dorothy's property, as it would be an asset for the town in the future.

"I'm very proud to be a part of this Board of Selectmen to work with [the town manager] and Archdiocese to take advantage of this very attractive piece of property," Champoux said.

Town Manager Jeff Hull said while the town currently has no specific plans for the property, the town does have needs that the property could help address.

"Whether it be a town or school administration building, senior center or recreation facility, there are a number of different needs we have but as so often is the case, an opportunity like this comes up when you don't have a particular plan in place," Hull said.

Hull too encouraged residents to come out and support the purchase of the St. Dorothy's property at Special Town Meeting.

"This is the window of opportunity we're working with, and it's clearly in the town's advantage to come out and encourage residents to vote in favor of this," Hull said.

The purchase price for the property is $1,725,000, according to Hull.

Selectman Judy O'Connell pointed out that the purchase would be made using available cash, meaning no additional tax burden for residents.

Selectman Michael Newhouse reminded residents that quorum for Special Town Meeting is 150 residents.

"Quorum for Special Town Meeting is 150 residents," Newhouse said. "If you can come and check in, it counts toward quorum."

Special Town Meeting will be held on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Wilmington Middle School auditorium.
