Fire Union Event Raises Over $18,000 for Children's Cancer Research

The event was held on June 14 at Red Heat Tavern.

Wilmington firefighters shaved their heads during an event earlier this month. And based on the amount of money raised, it was well worth it receiving a new look.

The Wilmington Firefighters Union hosted a St. Baldrick's event at Red Heat Tavern on June 14. During the event a total of 35 heads were shaved, and 16 of them were firefighters from Wilmington, Billerica and Stoneham.

Through the event, a total of $18,080 was raised for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, an organization that gives grants for children's cancer research.

There were many successful fundraisers in advance of the event, but leading the way was Mike Naimo, the father of honored child Anthony Naimo. He raised close to $4,000.

Firefighters thanked Red Heat Tavern for donating gift bags to the people shaving their heads. The restaurant also donated gift cards for the raffle and gave money to the event, in addition to having a cotton candy machine running that day for the children in attendance.

Danielle Valles of Phoenix Salon, Lauren Swift of Salon Oasis, Tyler Carlson of Hair by Tyler and Darlene Mauriello of Hair by Darlene were the ones responsible for shaving heads at the fundraiser

Residents can still help firefighters reach their goal of $20,000 by visiting their fundraising page and donating to the cause. To visit the site, click here.

"A huge thanks to all who took part from the shavees, to the barbers, host, and all of the supporters," said Russ Stering. "It really was successful from a fundraising perspective, but also in solidarity. It really was a fun day."
