Mikey Murphy Prepared to Move Back Home

Mike Murphy doesn’t know how to perform a cartwheel. But with the excitement of his son, Mikey, coming home after more than a year living in hospitals, he’s willing to learn.

After more than one year ago, Mikey has only been allowed home for a handful of visits, the .

But on September 10 the Wilmington teenager will return home permanently and continue to receive round the clock care.

“It was probably the best news I’ve heard in years. It overtook me,” said Mike Murphy. “This is my dream come true and has been since this happened. All I wanted to do was have him home. When he gets home I’ll be doing cartwheels, though I don’t know if I can complete one.”

On September 15, the Knights of Columbus is dedicating their annual wiffle ball tournament to Mikey. The day is being called Mikey’s welcome home day.

Mikey has had multiple surgeries in recent months, but after having a cast on his foot removed he has been pain free, according to his father.

Though he still is unable to speak, Mikey smiles a lot and his family believes he hears everything that goes on around him.

Caring for his son at home will be a challenge, but it’s one Mike is willing to face.

“We’re up for the challenge,” said Mike. “It’s a lot of work. You’re constantly on the go. Every time you turn around there is something to do. But it’s the best job of my life. I don’t get paid for it, but there’s nothing else I would rather do.”

A nurse will assist the family much of the time inside the home, which features a wheelchair ramp on the side that was installed following Mikey’s collapse.

While Mikey Murphy and his family don’t have their son back the way he was last June, they still remain awestruck by the boy who has already defied the odds each step of the way.

“It’s remarkable the steps he’s been able to overcome,” said Mike. “He wasn’t expected to make it through the first three days. Now everyone can’t wait to get him home.”
