Robert Hayes Won't Seek School Committee Re-Election

Regardless of the outcome of this spring’s election, there will be at least one new face on the Wilmington School Committee when the next term begins.

Current School Committee member Robert Hayes, who had already begun campaigning for the upcoming election after pulling papers at Town Hall, announced during Wednesday’s meeting that he no longer plans to seek re-election.

“I’ve decided not to commit to another three years for both personal and career-related reason,” said Hayes. “I will continue to volunteer in the community, just not in an elected position.”

Hayes said until this weekend, he had planned on following through with his election plans. However, by the end of the long weekend, he decided it was not in his best interest.

There will be three School Committee seats up for election this year. Also eligible for re-election are Kathleen Carroll and chairman Peggy Kane.

Residents interested in running for office can visit the office of Town Clerk Sharon George to pull papers. Hayes added that he encourages possible candidates to contact current members to learn more about the position.

“I have really enjoyed my time on this board, absolutely one of the most experiences of my life, and I wish I could do it again,” said Hayes. “I would encourage anyone interested in becoming a member to contact a current School Committee member to learn more about our roles and responsibilities, and to contact the Town Clerk to get an understanding of what you need to do to run for the seat.”
