Wilmington Unemployment Rate Dips

After a summer slump, will this positive trend continue?

The local August unemployment reports are out, and it seems Wilmington is rebounding from a recent slump.

According to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, the unadjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in August, down from 6.1 percent in July. But the rate still isn't down to the impressive 5.2 percent seen in March of this year.

This suggests a rebound -- or climb -- from earlier in the summer. In June, the unemployment rate in Wilmington climbed to 6.5, a high for the year.

Today, Wilmington seems to be faring better than the state.

Statewide, 7,500 jobs were added and the unemployment was 6.8 percent in August, down from 7.2 percent in July. But it was up by .1 percent since August 2012.

Also compared to August 2012, most areas in the state added jobs, and the largest percentage gains were seen in a few regions including Haverhill-North Andover-Amesbury.

Big job gains statewide were seen in Education and Health Services, which added 4,100 jobs in August and 16,300 jobs since August 2012. The construction industry added 900 jobs in August 4,700 jobs. Information technology added 700 in August and 3,100 jobs since August 2012.
