ReplyJoker go do something beside read this thread then! We can respect and mourn with the rest of Massachusetts and still have a discussion about something other than the tragedy going on all around us. I've been glued to the news since Monday and especially today. My head is pounding and I needed to step away for a bit because the stress was getting to me. That doesn't mean I don't care, or that I'm trying to disrespect anyone. I have family that live in the areas they are searching and I know people directly affected by the bombings. We are ALL trying to deal. Please don't bash us for not dealing in the way you think is appropriate.

I must have missed something who is treating who badly? I may disagree but I'm hopefully doing it respectfully.
I have to admit that I would not be happy having the carnival practically IN my backyard either, so I can see the point of the abutters. However I think there can be another solution to this that doesn't completely cancel the celebration. Because its much more than just a carnival. Like I said it means revenue for local business. Someone else mentioned non-profits as well and its really a week of good will and fun and pride for residents. Tewksbury does a similar celebration every year, so without any input from Wilmington, residents could easily go there instead. But, at least for me, it wouldn't be the same and it wouldn't be something that I'd do...

ReplyPersonally I wouldn't be interested in going to Tewksbury for a 4th of July celebration. Nothing against our sister town, its just the Livingston area isn't very convenient to get in and out of and the feeling of celebration would be lost for me. If Wilmington skips the celebration this year, so will I.

If you are so disgusted with this discussion why are YOU reading it? First and foremost my heart is with everyone else who is hurting, worrying, etc about what's going on in our beloved stated right now. But its overwhelming and some of us need a diversion. Shame on you for judging anyone...COWARD!

Of course we can make due without it, but may of us really look forward to it and its a point of pride for our town. Its one of the best if not THE best 4th of July celebrations around and the fact that we get people from all over coming here for it, it generates revenue for local businesses.

ReplyParking would have been an issue at the 4th of July building parking lot too. The plan was to have extra shuttle busses. The Town Hall field is surrounded by woods and is pretty large. Even a scaled down carnival would be better than nothing.

ReplyPlease consider doing the carnival at Town Hall! Its not ideal but still close enough to the high school area to have fireworks remain there (or even possibly over the lake??). This is an important tradition for those of us that live here! And as silly at this may sound, with everything going on locally here in the last week we NEED something happy to look forward to, something that celebrates our American pride!

ReplyKevin is trying to channel Elizabeth Warren. Hammering tax payers was her thing. Kevin knows nothing about stabilization funds or what is a reasonable expense for taxpayers. I like, I'm sure most taxpayers, would love to pay LESS in taxes, but not at the expense of our town, our safety, our children's educations, etc. Being that Kevin is NOT a taxpayer, I can understand why he wouldn't quite grasp this though...
