The carnival provides funding for the fireworks, so it does bring something to the table. I understand we have funds for this year's fireworks, but next year might be a little less festive. And I would bet there are a few thousand kids that would disagree with your statement about the carnival bringing nothing good to this town. My kids look forward to it each year, and they are very disappointed that it won't be part of the 4th of July festivities.

ReplyHow does Kevin's comment have anything remotely to do with the open houses this week... he has been warned time and time again, and yet the abuse continues.

ReplyWebmom-- what does your family eat? (totally not a snarky comment, just wondering how you stretch your dollar. I haven't seen a $100 grocery bill in at least 5 years, and I'm feeding a family of 4). I find it very difficult to get out of Market Basket each week under $160- and that includes all cleaning materials, produce and only one protein for the week. I know the kids snacks kill me each week, so I probably could decrease my bill by maybe $10, but I can't see $100.

On the Blog Post Aggravated with Wilmington? You'll Never Guess Who's On Who's Side

ReplyThis blog entry really strikes a chord with me. I think Wilmington actually has a water problem. Just look around Wilmington any given April or May day, and you will see all sorts of hoses pumping water out of cellars all over town, roads closed due to excessive flooding, etc. For the life of me, I don't know why we are so protective of this "precious" resource. (i know, i know- prepare for the onslaught Ipswich river, blah blah blah) A lot of it is mosquito-infested swamp land, I wish someone would come up with some sort of petition to fill some of the water pools around town-- THERE, I said it!

webmom, You are correct. "Back in the day" there was no thoughtful planning of where things were placed in this town, that's why we've suffered for years with "tin can alley" (as it was known) Rt 38 with all the gas stations and car dealerships lined up in a row. Believe it or not, it has actually gotten better over the years and the Planning board has done a more thoughtful job in planning the future for the town. Unfortunately, what's done has been done, and we have to live with some of the legacy stuff.

ReplyTracy has been in the Wilmington school system for 9 years, I wouldn't consider that a short tenure. New teachers/administrators bring new ideas and fresh perspectives and I think we all benefit from that. Mr. Tracy seems to be very passionate about his work here in Wilmington, and you can tell that he is very involved in all the school activities, he will be missed.

On the article Chief Begonis Hopes Country Can Learn From Newtown Tragedy

ReplyI agree that Begonis seems reasonable in this article, but I'm not sure Wilmington, as a community, needs to wait for actions to come down before we start to take inventory of our own processes and evaluate how we can further improve security measures at our schools. As I drove my daughter to school this week, I looked at our school buildings and surroundings with a different perspective. I noticed for the first time the 9' high glass front doors of the Middle School. I looked at the North Intermediate building and thought "yes, ugly. But you can't shoot your way through that door." It doesn't matter that we have security cameras, locked doors and protocols to buzz people in if the real evil can shoot its way through the building. Yes, there is a police officer in that building, and usually at the reception desk, thank God. But I do think there are things we can do as a community, to begin the process of re-evalutating our own security measures.

I'm not certain, but I think becoming involved in the town and being able to open a business have nothing to do with one another. I don't believe the town can decline a request for a common victualler license based on the kind of food they will be serving. It's still a free country (I think?!) so if a donut company wants to set up shop here in Wilmington, it has a right to do so. The people of the town will dictate whether or not there is demand for it by choosing to purchase their product, and so far, the donut companies have done very well here in Wilmington. :) So why not?!
