Marathon Finish Emotional, Exhausting for Locals

They weren't entered in the Boston Marathon to win it. But when they crossed the finish line, Michelle Bryan and Jill Chisholm couldn't help but feeling victorious. Despite what Chisholm called "brutal" heat, the Wilmington women were among a group of residents who completed the 26.2 mile course on Patriots' Day. "I really didn't know how my body would respond to intense heat and unrelenting sunshine," said Chisholm, who ran last year's marathon. "The atmosphere as far as runners goes was a bit scary, ambulances driving on the course, runners being rolled away in stretchers, vomiting in the street, and passing out. It was a little nerve wracking at first but I knew I was running smart and would be fine." The run was Bryan's first Boston …

Wilmington Runners Set to Run Boston Marathon

Despite scorching temperatures, 12 residents are slated to participate.

The field of runners at Monday's Boston Marathon may be smaller than most years. But there are still Wilmington residents expected to hit the ground running on Patriots Day. Because of expected temperatures around 90°, the Boston Athletic Association is urging inexperienced runners to sit out this year's race. In addition, the B.A.A. is offering deferral to next year's event. "It will involve an increased element of risk to all participants due to the heat.  Only the fittest runners should consider participating," said a statement on the event website. "In cooperation with the Boston Marathon's Medical Team, it is our recommendation that anyone entered in the marathon who has not met the qualifying standards for their age and gender …
