The battle for the 6th District seat is over.
Congressman John Tierney has defeated Republican challenger Richard Tisei in an extremely tight race for Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. This has been an unusually high-profile congressional race in Massachusetts, which is considered a stronghold for House Democrats. Tierney suffered from the impact of a family scandal involving his wife, her brother and her brother’s illegal offshore gambling business. Tisei, on the other hand, climbed to popularity with his aggressive campaign, his theme of bipartisanship and his years of serving in the state legislature. President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. Longtime State Rep. Jim Miceli rolled past challenger Doug Sears according to unofficial counts.
Updated at 10:31 p.m.: After a long campaign, Rep. Jim Miceli used his victory speech to supporters for a parting shot to challenger Doug Sears. "If you take Tewksbury and you take Wilmington, they don’t buy into dirty campaigning. I’m not going to be humble like I’ve been in the past," said Miceli, who never referred to Sears by name. "I’ve been in politics since 1963 and this guy is the dirtiest individual I’ve ever run against in my life. But the problem was he couldn’t find anything bad. And what he couldn’t find, he’d make up. We overcame that and I appreciate that." In Wilmington, the unofficial results show that Miceli cruised with a 7,834-2,279 margin of victory. Barack Obama won Massachusetts' 11 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Shortly after 8 p.m., the AP called Massachusetts for Obama, along with with six other east coast states and the District of Columbia. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Massachusetts. Sharon George said it's possible that 80 percent of the town's registered voters head to the polls Tuesday on Election Day.
If your plan is to make a quick trip in and out of your polling precinct on Election Day, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. According to Wilmington Town Clerk Sharon George, residents should plan to wait in line when they arrive to vote with the possibility that 80 percent of eligible voters will come to the polls. “There will be a line,” said George. “If people are planning to vote before work, they should try to get here early. We will move as efficiently as humanly possible to get people out as fast as we can.” George said that during the 2008 presidential election, 70 percent of Wilmington voters came to the polls, a total of over 12,000 residents. After seemingly endless months of campaigns, the time to vote has arrived. Election Day is Tuesday with polls opened from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Wilmington in an election that Town Clerk Sharon George said could draw 80 percent of the town's voters. So where do you go to vote? Residents from Precinct 1 and 2 vote at Boutwell School, voters from Precinct 3 and 4 will cast their ballot at Wildwood School and residents living in Precinct 5 and 6 will head to Town Hall.
