Crannell and Foley Snag Athlete of the Year Honors

Emily Crannell, a 2012 graduate, and Drew Foley, a current junior, were chosen as the top athletes of the year.

Emily Crannell and Drew Foley have one thing in common. They let their play do the talking. Both Wilmington High School athletes, Crannell a 2012 graduate, are soft spoken, but their performances on the court, ice, and field spoke loudly in the last year. As a result, Crannell and Foley were selected as Patch’s Athletes of the Year. Foley anchored the state championship Wildcat boys hockey team in between the pipes with a 1.72 goals against average, six shutouts and a 92 percent save percentage. He also was a key contributor for the boys soccer team, which reached the North Division 2 semifinal this fall. Crannell, meanwhile, was the standout player for the girls basketball team that reached the North Division 2 semifinal in the winter …

Back in February, Wilmington High senior Alex Furlong became just the fourth wrestler in the history of the program to be crowned a sectional champion twice when he accomplished that feat this weekend. In addition, he came the program's eighth wrestler to ever crack the 100-win plateau. I hope he was given strong consideration.   more ›

Final Chance to Nominate Wilmington's People of the Year

Let us know by Saturday who you think should win Athlete of the Year, Person of the Year and Teacher of the Year.

We've had several nominations for who made this a year to remember in Wilmington, and there's still time to make your selection. As we look to prepare our Athlete of the Year, Person of the Year and Teacher of the Year articles for next week, we are looking for input from our readers. Among the entries we've had for the Person of the Year are Paul Cardello for his work with iPods for Wounded Veterans, Lou Cimaglia for his contributions to Veterans Services, and now retired Town Manager Mike Caira for finishing up decades of service to the town. Several residents also nominated Kevin MacDonald, who has clashed with town officials throughout the year. MacDonald has been a key figure in the appeal of the Wilmington High School project, which …

Who Were the People of the Year in Wilmington?

Wilmington Patch wants to put together stories about the Person of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Teacher of the Year, and we need your nominations.

It was another year to remember in Wilmington, and there were plenty of people who made it that way. But who stood out the most to you? As the end of 2012 approaches, we want to compile stories on Wilmington's Person of the Year, Athlete of the Year, and Teacher of the Year. But we can't do it without your help. Does Michael Caira's final year as Town Manager make him worthy of a Person of the Year story? Lou Cimaglia's efforts for local veterans? She we pick one of the Women of Wilmington or other local volunteers for their support of the town? And on the fields, ice and courts, who was tops for the Wildcats? Did Drew Foley earn Athlete of the Year honors for his efforts in goal for the hockey team and his play on the pitch for the boys …

Dalton Rolli is Patch's Athlete of the Year

Senior's competitiveness, leadership, make him three sport success.

The Wildcats were down. But Dalton Rolli jolted them to life. Whether on the ice, on links or on the diamond, it’s what the Wilmington senior does. Rolli’s overtime winner against Masconomet in this winter’s North Division 2 boys hockey postseason was one of the signature moments of 2011, and it’s among the reasons the three-sport athlete was selected as the Wilmington Patch Athlete of the Year. “I felt like I was just flying,” said Rolli about the goal, which helped the team bounce back after allowing the tying goal with less than one second remaining in regulation. “I couldn’t feel my feet or anything. Once it went in, I saw everyone’s hands go up. It was probably the best goal I’ve ever scored, and the best feeling I’ve had as an …

Who Should Patch Select as Athlete of the Year?

Let us know in the comments section or e-mail matthew.schooley@patch.com.

The last year was a memorable one for Wilmington High School sports teams, and we want to know who the most memorable face of 2011 was for the Wildcats. With your help, we want to compile some nominations for Athlete of the Year. There were plenty of teams that made playoff runs since the year started. Wildcats like the boys hockey and boys basketball team earned regular season league titles, and so did the girls soccer team. Is Dalton Rolli the choice for playing three sports and blasting a playoff overtime goal? Maybe you think it should be Vinny Scifo for his dominance on the hardwood and diamond for the basketball and baseball teams. Or maybe it should be Holly Niemic, Rachel Grabar or one of the Lady Wildcats who helped the girls …
