Despite First Loss, Wildcats Riding Historic Start

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team fell to Arlington, 9-6, on Tuesday, but are off to the best start in the program's history.

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team came out of the gates blazing with a historic start. Despite a speed bump on Tuesday afternoon versus Arlington, the Wildcats expect to get right back on track as they cruise towards their first-ever postseason appearance. Visiting Arlington led throughout Tuesday’s contest at Woburn Street School. After falling behind 8-3 entering the final quarter, Wilmington came to life and pulled within two goals before eventually falling by a 9-6 margin. It was the first loss of the season for Wilmington, which has turned from an also-ran to a front-runner within the span of just one season. Following the setback against Arlington, the Wildcats are now 9-1 on the campaign and have already sealed up a …

Dominating Freshman Performance Leads Wildcats to Win

Wilmington High School pitcher Jack Gillis mowed down 15 Tewksbury batters via strikeout during his varsity debut, leading the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory.

If Wilmington High School freshman pitcher Jackson Gillis had any nerves entering his first varsity start on Monday, he certainly didn’t show it. Gillis fired a complete game and struck out 15 batters against rival Tewksbury, jolting the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory that was the team’s first of the year. “I talked to him before the game and he was nervous, as he should be because he’s a freshman,” said head coach Aldo Caira. “So I think that should build his confidence up, and it should build the whole team up. It’s a young team. Hopefully this is the right way to step off for the rest of season.” Wilmington didn’t wait long after the game’s 10 a.m. start to pounce on the Redmen. Leadoff hitter Brendan McDonough led off with a double, Tim …

Wildcat Baseball and Softball Teams Swept By Reading

Spring season is several games deep and on Tuesday the Wilmington High School baseball and softball teams hosted Reading High School.

Reading High School's baseball and softball teams were in town earlier this week, traveling to face Wilmington High School in Middlesex League action. The Lady Wildcats took a 1-0 edge on Tuesday before the Rockets began to climb back and shortly after took a 2-1 lead in the early innings. Reading eventually went on to a 5-1 win. On the baseball diamond, meanwhile, Reading showed why it is ranked No. 7 in the state by ESPN Boston. Wilmington, however, also put up a strong showing against a difficult foe despite a 7-1 loss. Wilmington trailed just 4-1 entering the final frame, but that's when the Rockets tacked on three insurance runs.

I certainly agree that the freshman and JV teams practice and play hard. Unfortunately it is very difficult for me to cover those games in addition to varsity games because I am just one person covering sports in eight towns. But that doesn't mean we don't want those teams on the site. Below are some great ways to make sure the non-varsity teams get onto Patch. And once they're on the site, …   more ›

Boys Lacrosse Continues Hot Start With Comeback Win

Wilmington High School erased a halftime deficit thanks to a strong start to the third quarter, improving to 4-0 on the year with a 13-9 win over Burlington.

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team is in the early stages of what it hopes to be a turnaround season. And on Tuesday, the Wildcats used a Burlington mistake to complete a turnaround in a Middlesex League clash at Woburn Street School. While Wilmington trailed, 6-4, late in the first half, the Red Devils were called for an illegal stick late in the second quarter. As a result, the Wildcats went on to score four goals in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, taking the lead for good as they held on for a 13-9 win. Ryan Kennedy scored three goals in the first half alone, and went on to notch five goals and two assists in the win. Also leading the way for the Wildcats was Brian Priem's four goals. Justin MacKinnon scored two…

Wildcats Flatten Rival Redmen in Lacrosse Action

After jumping ahead of Tewksbury early, Wilmington High School's boys lacrosse team cruised to a 16-10 victory in its season opener.

At 36 degrees in blustery conditions, it felt more like winter than the opening day of the spring sports season. But it was just the hot start the Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team was looking for. The Wildcats pounced to a 5-1 lead over rival Tewksbury in the first quarter on Tuesday afternoon and never looked back, cruising to a 16-10 win to open the 2013 campaign. Tewksbury hung around throughout the early going, but according to head coach Kieran Kavanaugh, for each string of Redmen goals, there was an answer for the Wildcats. Offensive numbers were gaudy for several Wilmington players. In total, four players notched hat tricks to open the year and seven different players found the back of the net. Brian Priem and Mitch …
