In honor of Memorial Day, Patch looks at the challenges facing veterans when their time serving overseas is over.
For soldiers everywhere, the challenges don’t end when they return from serving overseas. With Memorial Day today, Patch looks at the variety of issues that members of the United States armed forces face after active duty comes to an end. According to Veteran’s Agent Lou Cimaglia, first and foremost for veterans returning from duty is facing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that is common among soldiers. “One hundred percent of kids coming home need some sort of counseling,” said Cimaglia. “Some of these kids are just 21 or 22 years old and have already done a couple of tours overseas. They have issues that need to be dealt with, and we need to help them.” During a recent interview with Wilmington Patch, young veteran Craig Sullivan …

Wilmington's Memorial Day parade is slated for Monday at 10 a.m.
This is one of Lou Cimaglia’s favorite times of the year. And not just because Monday is Wilmington’s annual parade. According to the Wilmington Veterans’ Agent, Memorial Day weekend is an important time to reflect and honor the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice. “This is a big weekend,” said Cimaglia. “Everyone will hopefully stop and remember all of our fallen heroes, those who sacrificed themselves to serve and never made it home. It’s a special weekend for me, and it means a lot to see people honor all of the sacrifices that these men, women and their families have made.” This year’s parade will feature a different twist as members of the Korean War are honored along with other members of the armed forces. Cimaglia …

Craig Sullivan said he believes fate brought him to a friendship with fellow veteran Adam Smith and to support from a Wakefield couple whose veteran son took his own life.
Craig Sullivan, Adam Smith and Dave and Barbara Hoffman come from different walks of life, but they have one thing in common. They firmly believe in fate. Sullivan, a young Wilmington veteran who was seriously injured during duty in Iraq, met Smith, a Marine from Amesbury, when each was at the VA Clinic for their respective check up. After some conversation, it became clear to both how their friendship was meant to be. Sullivan told Smith his story, and lifted his shirt to reveal a large tattoo honoring two fallen soldiers that he served with who lost their lives on August 16, 2006. When Smith saw his fellow Marine’s touching tribute, his jaw nearly hit the floor. The date of August 16 is a familiar one for Smith. It’s his birthday. “We …

Governor proposes $11.25 million in increased funding in FY 2013.
Massachusetts has long been known for its financial support of veterans. If the proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget is approved, that trend will continue. According to a release from the office of Governor Deval Patrick, the proposed budget will include $11.25 million in increased funding for services benefiting veterans and their families. "It's amazing the benefits that are out there for veterans and their family members. It started a long time ago and has continued on," said Wilmington Veteran's Agent Lou Cimaglia. Massachusetts is the only state in the country where any city or town with more than 12,000 residents must have a full-time Veteran's Agent. The state also features a host of programs such as reimbursement for homeless veteran …
