After pulling papers to put his name on the ballot, Hayes said he had a change of heart for personal and career-related reasons and will not run this spring.

Regardless of the outcome of this spring’s election, there will be at least one new face on the Wilmington School Committee when the next term begins. Current School Committee member Robert Hayes, who had already begun campaigning for the upcoming election after pulling papers at Town Hall, announced during Wednesday’s meeting that he no longer plans to seek re-election. “I’ve decided not to commit to another three years for both personal and career-related reason,” said Hayes. “I will continue to volunteer in the community, just not in an elected position.” Hayes said until this weekend, he had planned on following through with his election plans. However, by the end of the long weekend, he decided it was not in his best interest. There …

School Committee Talks Drug Use, Class Sizes

According to principal reports, class sizes are small at the middle school and high school level.

Much of the discussion at Wednesday’s School Committee meeting centered around a pair of topics as board members heard presentations about class sizes and what the district is doing to prevent substance abuse. Wilmington Middle School principal Christine McMenimen and Wilmington High School principal Eric Tracy each said their class sizes are lower than usual, providing ideal learning experiences for students. “We are very fortunate to carry the numbers that we carry,” said Tracy. “I always love to brag to area principals, parents and anyone I can to highlight the things we’re doing well in the classroom. The class sizes we have allow us to do even better.” In the middle school, the majority of classes average at less than 20 students …

I truly hope that the school committee gets a fair and balanced presentation of the pros/cons of tablet vs. laptop technology. From the last Patch article it sounded like the Superintendent may have been mislead a little on the functionality of the iPads, and is being lead down a path that laptops are "cheaper". not true... and this town should not be choosing technology because that is what we …   more ›

I just got home from the High School Building Committee meeting. I thought I would let everyone on Planet Patch know that for $82 million dollars you will be getting a SIMULATED stone facade. The architect could not answer the Questions 1.) " What is the cost of just the building exclusive of site work, fields, utilities, etc.?" 2.) "What is the cost per classroom on average?" The committee was …   more ›

School Committee, Principals Discuss Improvement Plans

Representatives from all schools were at Wednesday meeting.

The principals of all Wilmington public schools were in attendance at Wednesday’s School Committee as they discussed their School Improvement Plans with the members. First up was Eric Tracy, Wilmington High School principal. The School Committee’s main questions involved the building’s library, which was the subject of concern during its accreditation process. There is no online catalogue at the school library, which still uses a card system. “Obviously that’s not right,” said Robert Hayes, who stressed the importance of the facility. “A library isn’t about reading. It’s about learning.”  Tracy said the school has already addressed integrating the library with the curriculum, and he believes progress has already been made. “It’s not just …
