In Wake of MCAS Scores, Middle School Schedule To Be Changed

Proposal calls for more time to be dedicated to core subjects.

Wilmington Middle School administrators want to alter the school's scheduling structure in the wake of disappointing scores on the last few rounds of MCAS exams. Appearing before the School Committee recently, Principal Christine McMenimen issued a presentation that called for, among other things, an additional 60 minutes of instruction time each day in the core subjects, as well as interdisciplinary "pods" in language arts, math, social studies and science, according to an article appearing in the Town Crier. The school would still follow block scheduling with a six-day cycle. Middle School Students Enjoy Hands On Science

Analog Devices brought demonstrations to Wilmington Middle School at Friday science fair.

Wilmington Middle School students took part in a hands on science lesson Friday as Analog Devices brought a variety of science experiments to the school. Waves of students moved throughout the science lab filling out worksheets as they learned about things like dry ice, electricity, and sound waves.

Seussical the Musical Opens Three Day Run Tonight

Wilmington Middle School performs musical Thursday, Friday and Saturday after months of hard work.

After months of hard work, curtains open Thursday on the Wilmington Middle School Drama Club’s spring play that promises to provide entertainment for all ages. The show opens Thursday at 7 p.m., continues Friday at the same time and closes out on Saturday at 2 p.m. Students auditioned in December and have been rehearsing daily since the beginning of January. “Everyone has put in a ton of work,” said Diana Kole, the play’s director. “Kids will love it, and grown ups will as well. It appeals to every single person, no matter the age.” Tickets cost $5 and will be sold at the door, but Kole said tickets have been selling fast since they went on sale. Wilmington Students Visit Winchester Hospital

Group films footage for 100th anniversary documentary.

A total of 11 students and two teachers from Wilmington Middle School’s computer literacy class visited Winchester Hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 15, to film footage for a documentary in honor of the hospital’s 100th anniversary.  Students toured Winchester Hospital and its Center for Cancer Care, and interviewed clinicians including robotic surgeon Dr. Peter Tiffany. Wilmington Middle School Needs Votes in iPad Contest

You can help school win iPad Mobile Carts.

Wilmington Middle School wants the opportunity to purchase iPad carts for its students, and they need your help to do so. The school is a finalist in the Clorox Power A Bright Future grant contest that would result in a $50,000 grant to purchase the equipment. "Creating and maintaining a high level of technological skills amongst our students is imperative since technology is creating worldwide competition," the school wrote in its entry. "The iPads will expose teachers and students to the newest technology, raise their technology competence, enhance the curriculum and will appeal to a variety of learning styles. Wilmington, Marblehead Communities Stunned by Chernovetz's Death

Seventh grade teacher inspired students, players, with fiery demeanor.

Soon, the hallways of Wilmington Middle School will be filled again with the buzz of the new school year. But one recognizable face will be notably missing when the doors open. Doug Chernovetz, 42, was a veteran seventh grade social studies teacher who impacted countless students before he died over the weekend, reportedly while on a camping trip in New Hampshire with his family. Teachers and students alike grieved the loss of the popular educator over recent days. Counselors will be available at the school over upcoming days to help the community deal with its loss. It has been a difficult few months for the Wilmington Middle School community, which has supported Mikey Murphy after his unexplained collapse earlier this summer. According …
