In a battle of defending state champions, it was Wilmington that toppled Burlington by a 3-1 margin on Saturday.
Drew Foley had an assist in preserving Wilmington’s 2-1 third period lead on Saturday against defending Division 1 state champion Burlington. Then he notched an assist on the goal that sealed the Wildcats’ victory. With Wilmington clinging to a one goal lead, Foley used his right pad to shut down a quick shot from Red Devil senior Liam Cronin with 57 seconds remaining. Just 16 seconds later, Foley notched an assist after he found Cam Owens on the breakaway. Owens slid the puck to Jake Rogers, who scored the empty net goal that sealed the 3-1 Wilmington victory. “We sometimes take for granted how many good saves he makes in a game,” said head coach Steve Scanlon. “The kids rely too much on him at times to make those big saves. But that was …

Though multiple callers reported believed scam to police, league president confirms the calls are approved.
Several residents alerted the Wilmington Police Department about a possible scam involving donations to the Wilmington Youth Hockey Association. But police and the WYHA league president have both confirmed to Patch that the calls are indeed legitimate. "The calling that has been going around is from production marketing, and they are calling to raise funds for a yearbook of the Wilmington Youth Hockey organization's 2011-12 season," said league president Joe Kippenberger. Kippenberger said the callers should identify themselves when they call. The soliciters ask residents to make a check out to Wilmington Youth Hockey and leave it for pick up by collector. According to information recently posted on the WYHA website, the marketing company…

Wilmington Youth Hockey Association took home plenty of hardware this season.
The Wilmington High School boys hockey team skated to a state title victory earlier this year. But those Wildcats aren’t the only hockey champions in town. During the Valley Hockey League playoffs earlier in April, Wilmington's youth program skated its way to a total of seven championships. Five teams won their divisional championship, while a pair of squads won conference finals. “Wilmington High School’s program can trace its roots right to Wilmington Youth Hockey Association,” said WYHA president Joe Kippenberger. “The coaches and staff here instill a passion into the players to want to play this game at its highest levels and that transpires into a successful feeder program for the high school.” During the most recent youth campaign, …

Red Devils earn 5-2 win behind strong second period.
Wilmington boys hockey coach Steve Scanlon knows his team was outscored on Saturday afternoon at Ristuccia Arena. But despite a 5-2 loss, the Wildcat mentor doesn’t believe his team was outclassed. The locals outshot Burlington 24-19 on the game and outplayed the Red Devils after falling in a 4-0 hole. But it was too little, too late against one of the top rated teams in the state. Wilmington dropped into a tie for first place in the Middlesex League Small School Division after the setback. “We played with them. I don’t think we were outclassed at all,” said Scanlon. “You never want to lose, especially when it’s an important divisional game. If anything, it lets the kids know they can play with a potential Super 8 team. Under the right …

After I got scammed by a culprit using the name of the local firefighter department in my area before, I became skeptical about solicitation calls like that. This is why when I get a call like that, or any suspicious call, I get the phone number and look it up through http://www.callercenter.com to double check. If the phone number comes up, it's most probably a scam and been reported. If it …   more ›
