The Lady Wildcats dominated play for much of the game but couldn't come up with the tying goal after falling behind in the first half.
The Wilmington girls soccer team dominated scoring chances throughout its North Division 2 final tilt against Belmont. But in the end, it was the Marauders who breezed to the sectional title thanks to a wind-aided goal. Belmont’s Corrine Ognibene lofted a shot high in the air from about 40 yards out, just hoping to put the ball on net. But with goalie Kim Woods off of her line, she slowly retreated towards the goal line before she realized the wind gave it enough of a boost that it was destined for the back of the net. Though Woods leapt into the air to try and knock it out of harm's way, the ball soared into the left side of the net. Ognibene’s goal gave Belmont a 1-0 edge at the 23:28 mark of the first half, and that was all the team …

The Wilmington girls soccer team will seek its first ever berth in the state championship game as the Wildcats face Belmont in the North Division 2 final on Monday.
This year’s Wilmington girls soccer team has already gone further than any other squad in program history. And they’re not done yet. On Saturday, head coach Sue Hendee’s charges knocked off No. 2 seed Hamilton-Wenham by a 2-0 margin in the North Division 2 semifinal round. As a result, the team advanced to face Belmont on Monday at 12:30 p.m., appearing in the bracket final for the first time ever. “It means a lot,” said Hendee. “It means that a lot of kids on the younger teams can look forward to having more success when they get to the varsity level. It’s exciting for everybody.” With Hamilton-Wenham controlling much of the play early, momentum shifted midway through the opening half. Generals senior captain Emily Gaucher ripped a shot …

The boys start a North Division 2 doubleheader in Woburn at 3:30 p.m. versus North Andover before the girls take the field at 5:30 p.m. against Hamilton-Wenham.
The North Division 2 boys and girls soccer brackets are down to just eight. And out of those eight teams, two of them will hit the turf on Saturday representing Wilmington High School. A pair of Wildcat teams hit the pitch seeking berths in the tournament final, which is set for Monday. Steve Scanlon’s boys soccer team had a first round bye before it cruised past Marblehead in the first round, winning by a 4-0 margin. Then on Tuesday, the Wildcats faced a much steeper task against Bedford. After a scoreless first half and two sudden death overtime periods before goalie Luke Foley stuffed Bedford’s tying attempt in penalty kicks, sealing the victory. On the girls side, Sue Hendee’s charges also earned a first round bye before taking on …

After 100 minutes and a 1-1 tie, Wilmington fell behind 2-1 in penalty kicks before storming back to earn a 2-1 (3-2) victory.
Penalty kick shootouts are a nightmare for soccer coaches. But for Wilmington goalie Kim Woods, the end result was a dream come true. After Wayland took a 2-1 edge in penalty kicks, Woods took over and saved three consecutive shots to give her team a 2-1 (3-2 PK) victory in the North Division 2 quarterfinal round on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium. “Kim making that first save was definitely a confidence builder,” said Wilmington head coach Sue Hendee. “We had missed two in a row and she had to make a save. It changed the momentum of the entire process. Making two more saves after that was ridiculous. She was incredible. I would say that has to be one of the best days Kim Woods has ever had in her life.” In regulation, it was Wilmington …

Both the Wilmington boys and girls soccer teams were forced into penalty kicks during the North Division 2 quarterfinals, and each came away with a win.
Editor's Note: The boys and girls soccer games scheduled for Friday night have been rescheduled. Because the Division 1 games were moved due to Thursday, the Division 2 games were also changed. The Wilmington boys soccer team will take on North Andover at 3 p.m. before the girls battle Hamilton-Wenham immediately following that tilt. Original Story: It was one of the most memorable nights in recent memory for the Wilmington High School soccer program. Both the boys and girls teams needed penalty kicks to advance on Tuesday night, and each was up to the challenge. Steve Scanlon's boys team played a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods before coming away with a sudden death penalty kick win. Sue Hendee's Lady Wildcats were tied at 1…

Wilmington girls soccer dominated play against Marblehead and held on to a 1-0 victory on Sunday, setting up a quarterfinal meeting with upstart Wayland on Tuesday.
During their North Division 2 postseason game on Sunday, the Wilmington girls soccer team mounted countless chances throughout the game but found the back of the net just once. The good news for the Lady Wildcats is that was all the scoring they would need. Senior Holly Niemiec powered home a rebound on a shot from Rachael Mara with 28:49 to play in the second half against Marblehead. The visiting Magicians never mounted enough established pressure to tie the game, and Wilmington went on to a 1-0 victory. Head coach Sue Hendee said Sunday’s victory was particularly special given that her team was eliminated in penalty kicks last season in their first playoff game in several years. “One of our big goals this year was not only to qualify, …

First at 4 p.m., the girls team looks to advance as they take on Marblehead on their home field. Then at 6 p.m., Steve Scanlon's boys team is up, facing the Magicians in their own playoff opener. Each team won their respective Middlesex League regular season title and earned a first round bye. The Lady Wildcats notched a 12-3-3 mark to earn the No. 6 seed in the bracket. Both the boys and girls soccer teams clinched Middlesex League regular season titles with wins on Monday.
Wilmington has a strong history of success on the pitch. But Monday was one of the most memorable days in Wildcat soccer history. The Wildcat boys and girls soccer teams defeated Wakefield on Monday night and with their respective victories, clinched Middlesex League titles. Wilmington’s boys team thumped the Warriors, 4-0, to improve to 5-0-1 in their last six games while the Lady Wildcats escaped with a 2-1 decision to win the league crown outright after sharing the title one year ago. “Last year was special because we didn’t know what to expect in our first year in the Middlesex League,” said girls head coach Sue Hendee. “But it is definitely nice to not have to share it with anybody else.” For the boys team, defense has been no problem…

The Wilmington girls soccer team fell behind 2-1 in the first half and though they dictated second half possession, the Wildcats lost by the same margin on Saturday.
For Wilmington girls soccer coach Sue Hendee, the formula was simple during her team’s 2-1 road loss to Tewksbury on Saturday. “They had two opportunities to score and they did. We had opportunities to score and we didn’t,” said Hendee. “I think that was the difference in the game.” The Redmen cashed in on two goals from Nicole Chaet in the opening minutes and though Rachael Mara added a first half tally for Wilmington, the Wildcats suffered their second loss in just over a week. Hendee’s charges played strong in the second half, spending the majority of the frame in attack mode. Still, they couldn’t crack the scoreboard with the tying goal. “That’s what we’ve been struggling with in games that we’ve lost,” said Hendee. “We’ve gotten down …

Congratulations to the Lady Wildcats. What a great ride and what a great group of student athletes! Sue Hendee is right, if the girls had a chance to play and practice on artificial turf things quite possible could have turned out differently. It is a much faster game on turf. Having watched the girls and boys play at the newly renovated Woburn High School, I can only hope that things move …   more ›
