Wilmington Municipal election 2013

Incumbents Dominate Ballot on Wilmington Election Day

All candidates eligible for re-election won their respective races and will be joined by newcomer Julie Broussard, who earned a seat on the School Committee.

It was a tale of two different races. But in the end, the results on the School Committee and Board of Selectmen ballots were similar. In the race for three School Committee seats, a packed field was cordial throughout. With outspoken resident Kevin MacDonald taking on a pair of incumbent candidates in the Board of Selectmen race, things were a bit more contentious on the campaign trail. But the common trend in both races was that incumbents ruled the ticket as all four candidates up for re-election won their respective races. Mike Newhouse and Lou Cimaglia handily defeated MacDonald and Daniel Murphy. By an unofficial count, Cimaglia topped the ticket with 2,697 votes followed by Newhouse with 2,692, MacDonald with 574 and Murphy with 513…

Wilmington Voters Head To The Polls To Choose Selectmen, School Committee

Voters will also be casting ballots in the primary for U.S. Senate. Here is all the information you need before casting your vote.

(Editor's Note: Copies of the sample ballots for the Municipal election and the Senate Primaries have now been attached to this story.) The voting process will be a bit different for Wilmington residents who head to the polls on Tuesday. Rather than just receiving one ballot on which to make their selections, they can expect to take two separate ballots into the voting booth. While the Board of Selectmen opted to hold the municipal election on the same day as the Special Senate Primary, both are distinct, individual elections. So voters will be handed a Municipal Ballot and will also take either a Democratic or Republican Senate Primary Ballot. With just two contested races, the Municipal Ballot will look something like this:   Board of …

Free Speech Talk Headlines Board of Selectmen Debate

Candidates Mike Newhouse, Lou Cimaglia and Kevin MacDonald made their pitches during a televised debate on Tuesday night.

As was expected, there was no love lost between Wilmington’s incumbent Board of Selectmen candidates and their challenger during a televised debate on Tuesday night. Current selectmen Lou Cimaglia and Mike Newhouse squared off against challenger Kevin MacDonald at the Wilmington Community Television studios in advance of Election Day, which is scheduled for April 30. MacDonald has been a regular attendee at town meetings, especially is the last year-plus, and has often criticized selectmen for their leadership. Tuesday was no different as he attacked the credibility of his opponents and was eventually asked to leave about one hour into the debate. Among the major topics throughout the night was free speech, something that MacDonald has …

I want to set the record straight for all the obsessed people in Wilmington, Richard Jertz does not live in Wilmington. A friend of mine told me about Kevin M. and how the people in Wilmington were crazy over the things he has said and done. I did not believe him until I went on the patch. He may be a little out there but he is the only person coming prepared with stats and figures about all his …   more ›

What Candidates Have Pulled Papers for Election Day?

As of Friday afternoon, eight candidates have pulled papers for a total of seven spots on four boards.

Though there is plenty of time remaining for candidates to declare their intentions for Election Day, things are slow so far as the ballot begins to take shape. As of Friday, the same three residents who pulled papers for two Board of Selectmen positions near the start of the eligible period remain the only trio to have done so. Incumbents Michael Newhouse and Lou Cimaglia join Daniel Murphy as the three interested potential candidates who have pulled papers through the Town Clerk's office. For School Committee, the three current board members whose spots are up for re-election have all pulled papers. Robert Hayes, Margaret Kane and Kathleen Carroll all declared their intentions to run, though Hayes since announced that he will not be …

Chairmen Join Growing List of Election Candidates

Both Mike Newhouse and Peggy Kane pulled papers on Wednesday, the first day to pull papers for this spring's election.

Lou Cimaglia and Robert Hayes confirmed on Wednesday that they will be running for re-election to their respective boards. But they won't be the only ones. According to the Town Clerk's office, Board of Selectmen chairman Mike Newhouse pulled papers on Wednesday, the first day that candidates were eligible to declare their intentions for Election Day. Daniel Murphy, who pulled papers last year as well but didn't end up factoring into the election, also pulled papers for the Board of Selectmen race on Wednesday. He joins incumbents Cimaglia and Newhouse in the race for two open seats. In addition, School Committee chairman Peggy Kane pulled papers for re-election, according to the Clerk's office. Kane and Hayes both will be hoping to regain…

Cimaglia Will Run for Re-Election This Spring

With two Board of Selectmen seats expiring this spring, at least one of those candidates has already decided to run for re-election.

Election Day is still months away in Wilmington, but there is already at least one name that residents can count on seeing on their ballot this spring. Lou Cimaglia’s seat is one of two on the Board of Selectmen that voters will be asked to fill, and he told Patch this week that he will indeed run be pulling papers to run in hopes of being elected for a third term. Chairman Mike Newhouse’s seat is also up this spring, and several of his fellow board members said they hope his name will also be on the ballot on Election Day. “Continuity is extremely important this time around,” said Cimaglia. “Change isn’t a bad thing, but where we are now with a new Town Manager, new Assistant Town Manager, and hopefully building a new high school soon, …

Town Clerk Expects High Voter Turnout in Wilmington

Sharon George said it's possible that 80 percent of the town's registered voters head to the polls Tuesday on Election Day.

If your plan is to make a quick trip in and out of your polling precinct on Election Day, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. According to Wilmington Town Clerk Sharon George, residents should plan to wait in line when they arrive to vote with the possibility that 80 percent of eligible voters will come to the polls. “There will be a line,” said George. “If people are planning to vote before work, they should try to get here early. We will move as efficiently as humanly possible to get people out as fast as we can.” George said that during the 2008 presidential election, 70 percent of Wilmington voters came to the polls, a total of over 12,000 residents. On Tuesday, polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Town Hall, Wildwood School …
