Boys Soccer Season Ends In North Semis [VIDEO]

North Andover scored late in the first half and went on to a 3-0 win, ending Wilmington's successful campaign.

Steve Scanlon’s Wilmington boys soccer team had a great season. They didn’t, however, have a great day on Saturday. “It was a bad day to have a bad game,” said the Wildcat head coach, whose team was eliminated with a 3-0 loss to North Andover in the North Division 2 semifinal. “We stood around watching for a good portion of it. Not to take anything away from them because they’re a good club that put us under a lot of pressure. But we just didn’t have a good day.” Despite struggling at times in the opening half, Wilmington was in position to enter the intermission in a scoreless tie. But instead, the Scarlet Knights began to ramp up the offensive pressure in the closing minutes before halftime, and eventually cracked the scoreboard with …

Wildcats Hope Semis Are Sweet on Saturday

The boys start a North Division 2 doubleheader in Woburn at 3:30 p.m. versus North Andover before the girls take the field at 5:30 p.m. against Hamilton-Wenham.

The North Division 2 boys and girls soccer brackets are down to just eight. And out of those eight teams, two of them will hit the turf on Saturday representing Wilmington High School. A pair of Wildcat teams hit the pitch seeking berths in the tournament final, which is set for Monday. Steve Scanlon’s boys soccer team had a first round bye before it cruised past Marblehead in the first round, winning by a 4-0 margin. Then on Tuesday, the Wildcats faced a much steeper task against Bedford. After a scoreless first half and two sudden death overtime periods before goalie Luke Foley stuffed Bedford’s tying attempt in penalty kicks, sealing the victory. On the girls side, Sue Hendee’s charges also earned a first round bye before taking on …

Foley's Goaltending Sparks Wildcats to PK Win [VIDEO]

After regulation, two overtimes and five rounds of penalty kicks, Wilmington won Tuesday's quarterfinal game in a the first round of sudden death kicks against Bedford.

Luke Foley’s birthday is Wednesday. But it’s tough to believe anyone got him a present comparable to the one he provided himself the night before. Foley made two saves in penalty kicks against Bedford in the North Division 2 quarterfinal round, including the game-clincher that propelled the Wildcats into Friday’s semifinal round against North Andover. “It was the best early birthday present ever,” said Foley after the game. “My teammates told me to just stay calm and don’t panic. Obviously they’re going to score a goal sooner or later, so you have to just shake it off, not get frustrated and keep diving.” It took a game-saving effort from another Foley in overtime to make sure the game reached penalty kicks. Midfielder Drew Foley, who is …

VIDEO: Boys and Girls Soccer Need Penalty Kicks to Advance

Both the Wilmington boys and girls soccer teams were forced into penalty kicks during the North Division 2 quarterfinals, and each came away with a win.

Editor's Note: The boys and girls soccer games scheduled for Friday night have been rescheduled. Because the Division 1 games were moved due to Thursday, the Division 2 games were also changed. The Wilmington boys soccer team will take on North Andover at 3 p.m. before the girls battle Hamilton-Wenham immediately following that tilt. Original Story: It was one of the most memorable nights in recent memory for the Wilmington High School soccer program. Both the boys and girls teams needed penalty kicks to advance on Tuesday night, and each was up to the challenge. Second Half Surge Jolts Wildcats Into Quarterfinals [VIDEO]

Entering halftime in a scoreless tie, the Wilmington boys soccer team caught fire in the second half and went on to a 4-0 win.

It took Marblehead boys soccer head coach Scott Laramie just two words to describe the Wilmington team that had just beaten his team in the North Division 2 playoffs. “Strong and physical,” said Laramie after the Wildcats rode a powerful second half to a 4-0 win on Sunday. “They play the way they’re supposed to play and they knock the ball around. We’re very happy to have played them. That’s exciting stuff.” Though the teams were scoreless entering intermission, No. 3 Wilmington cracked the scoreboard just over two minutes into the second frame and advanced to the quarterfinals where they will host No. 6 Bedford. With 37:21 to play in the second half, Kory McGilvray lofted a long throw in to the center of the goal. That’s where towering …

Middlesex Season Twice as Nice for Wildcats Soccer

Both the boys and girls soccer teams clinched Middlesex League regular season titles with wins on Monday.

Wilmington has a strong history of success on the pitch. But Monday was one of the most memorable days in Wildcat soccer history. The Wildcat boys and girls soccer teams defeated Wakefield on Monday night and with their respective victories, clinched Middlesex League titles. Wilmington’s boys team thumped the Warriors, 4-0, to improve to 5-0-1 in their last six games while the Lady Wildcats escaped with a 2-1 decision to win the league crown outright after sharing the title one year ago. “Last year was special because we didn’t know what to expect in our first year in the Middlesex League,” said girls head coach Sue Hendee. “But it is definitely nice to not have to share it with anybody else.” For the boys team, defense has been no problem…

Victory Not Completely Sweet for Boys Soccer

Though the Wildcats won 2-0 over Stoneham, head coach Steve Scanlon wasn't thrilled with his team's performance on Thursday.

Head coach Steve Scanlon’s Wilmington boys soccer team found a bit of offense and climbed within two points of a postseason berth during a 2-0 victory over Stoneham on Thursday afternoon. But Scanlon wasn’t in much of a celebrating mood after the game. “It was nice to get a couple of goals, but honestly I thought it as terrible soccer,” said Scanlon. “I thought both teams played poorly. It was the result we were after, but we really didn’t play very well.” The victory improved Scanlon’s charges to 6-1-4 on the year, with a long list of defensive shutouts included in their record. Defense, however, has not been the problem for the Wildcats. Throughout the campaign its been a struggle offensively, and that was again the case in the first …

Wildcat Boys Soccer Growing to Be Formidable Foe

Wilmington is off to a 2-0-2 start and still has room for improvement.

With age comes experience. And for the Wilmington boys soccer team, with experience comes victories. A young Wildcat team earned a postseason berth last year, and head coach Steve Scanlon said he has high hopes for this year’s team that brings back several key players. “We’re a more mature team,” said Scanlon. “They’re physically bigger. The first year you adjust to the physical play of the varisty level and it’s a bit of a growing year. They’re past that now. They’re learning to play the game a little quicker, and that comes with experience.” So far the team’s growth is paying off. Wilmington opened the year with a 2-2 draw against Woburn, surprised Lexington with a 1-0 victory, worked past Reading in a 2-0 tilt and earned a draw against …
