Controversy Surrounds Exiting Boys Lacrosse Coach

Wilmington High School boys lacrosse coach Kieran Kavanaugh will not return next year and while some players say they'll miss him, others say Kavanaugh was asked to leave.

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team put together the best season in program history this year, making the playoffs for just the second time and earning a Middlesex League title after going undefeated for much of the campaign. As the team looks to build on this year’s success, however, it will be doing so with a new coach on the sideline. Head coach Kieran Kavanaugh, who led the team for the last two seasons, will not return next year. Kavanaugh cited scheduling conflicts with his work life and assistant coaching duties with the Boston Cannons. “I think winning the Middlesex League championship was a great accomplishment for the coaching staff, the team and the town,” said Kavanaugh. “So I have a great feeling on where this …

Historic Lacrosse Season Ends in Opening Round

Wilmington's took a late lead but the best year in program history came to a close on Tuesday with a loss to visiting Holliston in the preliminary round of the postseason.

It was the best season in the history of the Wilmington High School boys lacrosse program. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, it came to a close a bit earlier than they had hoped. After years as an also-ran and only one previous postseason appearance, Wilmington the bracket's No. 9 seed and hosted No. 24 Holliston on Tuesday afternoon. Though Wilmington took a 10-9 lead on a Ryan Kennedy goal with 9:30 to play in the fourth quarter, Holliston ripped off the game's final five goals and went on to a 14-10 victory to advance to face Winchester in the bracket's first round. Head coach Kieran Kavanaugh said that despite the loss, he hopes to keep the program moving forward in the right direction. The Wildcat mentor said his team's JV team and …

Wildcat Boys Lacrosse Learns Playoff Fate

Wilmington High School snagged its second ever playoff berth and will be the bracket's No. 9 seed.

Thanks to the best regular season in program history, the Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team is heading to the playoffs for just the second time ever. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association released its postseason pairings on Friday, and included was the Wildcats who snagged the No. 9 seed in the tournament. As a result, Wilmington is slated to take on No. 24 seed Holliston on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the preliminary round. Holliston enters the tournament with a record of 11-7 while the Wildcats notched an impressive record of 14-4 following a bit of a late season stumble. The winner of Tuesday's contest will take on either No. 8 Winchester or No. 25 Pentucket in the first round of the tournament. It was a historic …

Wildcats Lacrosse Tuning Up for Postseason Appearance

Despite a Wednesday loss, Wilmington's boys lacrosse team is in good position with a record of 13-3 entering the final games of the regular season.

After a Thursday loss to visiting Woburn, Wilmington boys lacrosse head coach Kieran Kavanaugh said it’s critical for his players to have short-term memory as all good teams do. During the most successful season in Wildcats’ lacrosse history, there haven’t been many opportunities to test that theory because there haven't been many losses to bounce back from. Wilmington lost for just the third time on the year Thursday, falling to the Tanners by a 10-6 margin to drop to 13-3 on the year. “In sports, you have to put wins and losses behind you immediately,” said Kavanaugh. “We have the talent to do something in the playoffs, so we need to get back to working hard in practice so it translates into the games.” Mitch DeAmbrose scored three times…

Despite First Loss, Wildcats Riding Historic Start

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team fell to Arlington, 9-6, on Tuesday, but are off to the best start in the program's history.

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team came out of the gates blazing with a historic start. Despite a speed bump on Tuesday afternoon versus Arlington, the Wildcats expect to get right back on track as they cruise towards their first-ever postseason appearance. Visiting Arlington led throughout Tuesday’s contest at Woburn Street School. After falling behind 8-3 entering the final quarter, Wilmington came to life and pulled within two goals before eventually falling by a 9-6 margin. It was the first loss of the season for Wilmington, which has turned from an also-ran to a front-runner within the span of just one season. Following the setback against Arlington, the Wildcats are now 9-1 on the campaign and have already sealed up a …

Boys Lacrosse Continues Hot Start With Comeback Win

Wilmington High School erased a halftime deficit thanks to a strong start to the third quarter, improving to 4-0 on the year with a 13-9 win over Burlington.

The Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team is in the early stages of what it hopes to be a turnaround season. And on Tuesday, the Wildcats used a Burlington mistake to complete a turnaround in a Middlesex League clash at Woburn Street School. While Wilmington trailed, 6-4, late in the first half, the Red Devils were called for an illegal stick late in the second quarter. As a result, the Wildcats went on to score four goals in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, taking the lead for good as they held on for a 13-9 win. Ryan Kennedy scored three goals in the first half alone, and went on to notch five goals and two assists in the win. Also leading the way for the Wildcats was Brian Priem's four goals. Justin MacKinnon scored two…

Wildcats Flatten Rival Redmen in Lacrosse Action

After jumping ahead of Tewksbury early, Wilmington High School's boys lacrosse team cruised to a 16-10 victory in its season opener.

At 36 degrees in blustery conditions, it felt more like winter than the opening day of the spring sports season. But it was just the hot start the Wilmington High School boys lacrosse team was looking for. The Wildcats pounced to a 5-1 lead over rival Tewksbury in the first quarter on Tuesday afternoon and never looked back, cruising to a 16-10 win to open the 2013 campaign. Tewksbury hung around throughout the early going, but according to head coach Kieran Kavanaugh, for each string of Redmen goals, there was an answer for the Wildcats. Offensive numbers were gaudy for several Wilmington players. In total, four players notched hat tricks to open the year and seven different players found the back of the net. Brian Priem and Mitch …

Wildcats Receive Improved Effort in Latest Loss

Boys lacrosse team remains in hunt for first win of the season.

The Wilmington boys lacrosse team is frustrated with its lack of results early on in the season, evident under the bright sun on Monday morning. The Wildcats played one of their best tilts of the year, but still fell to Tewksbury, 9-5. Winless Wilmington also lost its head coach with 18 seconds to play in the game as mentor Kieran Kavanaugh was ejected following a pair of misconduct flags dished out for arguing with the referees. Further discipline is possible for Kavanaugh, who may face a suspension for his ejection. Tewksbury improved to 4-3 on the year with the victory, despite a solid effort from host Wilmington. The Redmen went up 7-1 in the third quarter before two goals by Mitchell DeAmbrose and one from Brooks Carter made things a …

New Face Ready to Lead Boys Lacrosse

Kieran Kavanaugh takes over as head coach hoping to keep team moving in the right direction.

Nearly all of the faces on the Wilmington boys lacrosse team. There is, however, one new face for the Wildcats. Kieran Kavanaugh takes over as head coach, replacing Mike Fay who led the team to an improved 2011 campaign. Only two seniors graduated from that team, which showed progress after struggling in previous seasons. “We have a great team, and I recognized that as soon as I started working with them,” said Kavanaugh. “I talk to (Fay) every day. We just want what’s best for the program. The players understood the concept I brought to the table and accepted it right away. It’s always tough transitioning to a new coach, but it’s gone well.” Mitchell DeAmbrose, Brain Priem, and Ryan Kennedy are among the players in a strong group of …
