Several members of the Boston Bruins offered messages of congratulations to Wilmington High School boys hockey, the team the black and gold share their practice rink with.
The Wilmington High School boys hockey team has won two straight state championships, and the team they share Ristuccia Arena with has taken notice. Several members of the Boston Bruins offered their messages of congratulations to the Wildcats following a recent session at their practice facility. Among them was head coach Claude Julien, who has said in the past he is a big fan of team manager RJ Townsend. During the season, Townsend helps out the Bruins at some of their Wilmington practices. Julien joked that while he's happy for the Wildcats on their second straight state title, he's glad the season is over so Townsend can get back to his old look. For a second straight year, Wilmington players died their hair blonde during their …

In the first period of last Sunday's win, Wilmington goalie Drew Foley gloved a seemingly certain Franklin goal, and WCTV's video shows just how great of a save it was.
The save was so big that even Wilmington High School boys hockey players and coaches thought it was in the net. A week later it's still hard to fathom just how Drew Foley plucked the puck out of the air and made a game-altering save, even when watching the video. Wilmington Community Television recently posted a YouTube video of the save from last Sunday's 4-0 state championship win for the Wildcats, the team's second straight title victory over Franklin. To reset the scene: It was a scorless game with 8:43 left in the first period and Foley made the initial save on a Panther shot. The puck got lost in a crowd of skaters, bounced off of Anthony Castellano's skate and found its way to the stick of a Franklin skater who was less than five …

Wilmington High School beat Franklin for a second straight year in the Division 2 state title game to win the program's second championship in as many years.
The Wilmington High School boys hockey team had so much fun winning at TD Garden last year, they figured they’d do it again. Thanks to a 4-0 victory over Franklin on Sunday afternoon, the Wildcats sealed a second straight Division 2 state championship win. “Last year, it took a lot longer to set in,” said junior Cody McGowan, who scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway with 1:27 remaining in the first period. “This year, we’re already feeling it. We’re on cloud nine.” While the game ended up another lopsided notch in Wilmington’s belt, it could have been different if not for the goaltending of junior Drew Foley. With 8:43 to go before the first intermission, a bad bounce put the puck on a Franklin stick with a wide-open net just …

Drew Foley was sparkling in net and Wilmington notched three third period goals to skate away with a 4-0 win at TD Garden, the team's second straight state championship.
The Wilmington High School boys hockey team was too strong, too fast and too talented for Franklin as the Wildcats pulled away late to seal a 4-0 victory and the team's second straight Division 2 state championship at TD Garden. Cody McGowan opened the scoring on the breakaway in the first period, Brendan McDonough added his seventh goal of the postseason and Jake Rogers and Luke Foley each scored to seal the win. "It's your senior year and you always want to go out on top with a championship," said captain Cam Owens. "To win two of those, it's a feel you can't describe." Check back with Wilmington Patch on Monday for complete coverage, and relive the title winning game by looking back on Patch's live chat. Are you a big fan of the …

Wilmington plays Franklin at 1:30 p.m. at TD Garden and a win would seal a second consecutive state championship win.
The Wilmington boys hockey team is back on the biggest stage in Massachusetts high school hockey for a second straight year. And the Wildcats are ready for a repeat performance. In a rematch of last year’s Division 2 state title game, Wilmington squares off against Franklin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday on the ice of TD Garden in Boston. With a win, the Wildcats would seal a dominating postseason run with a second consecutive state championship. “We knew coming into the season that we had a lot of skill, and our goal was to get back and win at The Garden,” said senior captain Cam Owens. “Last year we didn’t know what if we were going to be able to win it all, but we were hopeful. I won’t say that we knew we’d be back this year, but we had a …

The Panthers square off against Wilmington in the state championship game after losing the last two years, and we have some facts to know about the Wildcats' foe.
The Franklin High School boys hockey team's mascot is the Panther. But Wilmington is hoping to turn them into the Bills on Sunday. If the Wildcats are able to topple Franklin in the Division 2 championship game, Franklin will have lost three straight title game contests. That's the feat accomplished by the Buffalo Bills of the early 1990s as they fell in the Super Bowl three straight years. So who is Franklin and how did they get to the championship game? We look behind enemy lines with some facts about the Panthers. No one will cover Sunday's game like Wilmington Patch, so be sure to check back throughout the day for complete coverage that will include a preview, live chat during the game, and photos and video from the tilt itself.

With much focus on his linemate, Cam Owens, McDonough has turned into a potent scorer for the defending champion boys hockey team.
Earlier this postseason, Wilmington High School boys hockey coach Steve Scanlon lightheartedly begged opponents to focus their defensive attention on Cam Owens, the leading scorer in program history. The reason was simple. He knows that would leave open Brendan McDonough, another Wildcat skater who’s turned into a potent top line scorer. “Key on Cam all you want. Someone’s open,” Scanlon said with a smile after his team’s 4-1 win over Boston Latin in the North Division 2 quarterfinal round. “When (McDonough) is on, he’s the whole package … He’s certainly a force. Cam’s a player, but people forget we have a ‘1’ and a ‘1A.’” McDonough is a veteran player for Wilmington, even though he’s only a junior. He was a member of the state …
