Debate Ends Early for BOS Candidate MacDonald [VIDEO]

Board of Selectmen hopeful Kevin MacDonald was asked to leave the WCTV candidates' debate on Tuesday night after being warned several times about personal attacks.

Three Board of Selectmen hopefuls began the annual candidates' debate inside the Wilmington Community Television studio on Tuesday night. Only two, however, remained by night's end. Moderator Steve Bjork asked for police assistance to remove candidate Kevin MacDonald from the debate after MacDonald was warned throughout the evening to refrain from using personal attacks against individuals and departments during his answers. MacDonald's first warning came during his opening statement, with Bjork interjecting several times in the subsequent hour before MacDonald was removed. About one hour in to the debate, Bjork issued his final warning to MacDonald. "No more attacks that cannot be substantiated will be allowed," said Bjork. "My patience …

I think he was asked to leave the debate for his non-compliance with agreed-upon rules and outline for last night's debate. Am I incorrect? Just before he was asked to leave, he was given several warnings to phrase his statements in the form of a question to one of his opponents, which he neglected to do. Perhaps he needed more time to get his thoughts together, but I think he should have been …   more ›

New Frozen Yogurt Shop Opening, Analog Expansion on Hold

Wilmington's Board of Selectmen discussed a long list of agenda items during Monday night's meeting.

Selectmen tackled a long list of agenda items on Monday night, starting with a new frozen yogurt shop and continuing to discuss the high school project and several other pieces of business in between. Cuong Bui was briefly before board members to open the meeting. He is opening Pink Melon Frozen Yogurt in the Main Street plaza that previously was home to K&A Cones. Bui, whose self-serve yogurt business will be open from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., received a common victualer license from the board. Much of the meeting on Monday night centered on discussion of three main topics. Selectmen spoke candidly about the high school appeals and associated cost increases, chairman Mike Newhouse barred Kevin MacDonald from speaking at future meetings and the …

Newhouse: MacDonald's Voice No Longer Welcome at Meetings

Chairman Mike Newhouse had strong words for Kevin MacDonald as he told the vocal resident that he will no longer be recognized to speak at future meetings.

The longest Board of Selectmen meeting in recent years was also among the most heated, as board members fired back at arguably their harshest critic on Monday night. Chairman Mike Newhouse sparked a heated exchange with Kevin MacDonald when he told MacDonald that he will no longer be recognized and allowed to speak at selectmen meetings. Newhouse told MacDonald that would happen when he ruled him out of order multiple times at the last selectmen meeting, and said he will follow through on not recognizing MacDonald until it is legally necessary at a public hearing. Newhouse said he made the decision because he believes confrontations with MacDonald could escalate to the point where it could become more than a verbal altercation. “Your …

Kevin is someone's son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend. If you don't agree with his politics, then do some research and present an intelligent argument for debate. Getting personal is ugly, hurtful and usually a tactic for one who has run out of fact-based, educated arguments to present.   more ›

Gym Demolition Up for Discussion Monday Night

During a jam packed Monday meeting, the Board of Selectmen will vote on whether to officially go forward with the February demolition of the high school gym.

Wilmington's Board of Selectmen has plenty on its agenda Monday night. But the biggest item is likely the state of the high school project and more specifically the scheduled demolition of the school's gymnasium. The meeting is slated to take place inside Town Hall, Room 9, with executive session to discuss the demolition plans at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will open to public discussion at 7 p.m. First on the agenda is Cuong Bui, who seeks a common victualer license to open Pink Melon Frozen Yogurt at 269 Main Street. At 7:05 p.m., board members are scheduled to discuss the North Intermediate School window project, which has been delayed after being approved at Town Meeting. After the status of that project is discussed, the major agenda item …

Free Cash, Farmers Market Discussed at Tuesday Meeting

The Board of Selectmen discussed a number of items last night, also including the high school appeals and new Principal Assessor.

Wilmington’s Board of Selectmen discussed a wide variety of issues on Tuesday night, including the Farmers Market, high school delays and a new hire at Town Hall. After Victor and May Hui, the owners of the restaurant previously known as Royal Dynasty, updated board members on the progress of their renovations, Health Director Shelly Newhouse provided information on an upcoming Substance Abuse Awareness Night. For complete coverage of that topic, check back with Patch at 5 p.m. Next up was Dana Burnham, who gave a presentation on the 2012 Wilmington Farmers Market season, and what the group hopes to do next year. “Switching the hours this year made a big difference,” said Burnham, the Farmers Market president. “We had steadier crowds, but …

In my opinion $11,255,673 of free cash does not represent conservative budgeting, it represents over taxation and a practice of not spending enough money on the proper maintenance of public buildings like our schools. Every year the Town seeks the maximum tax increase under prop two and one-half (maybe the Town doesn't need the maximum increase every year). We have heard for that last year what …   more ›

Selectmen Discuss New Hire, Contract Agreement, and Flu Clinics

Tuesday's meeting was completed in less than 45 minutes.

Board members moved through Tuesday’s meeting at a blistering pace but still touched upon a variety of important topics. First up during the meeting, which lasted less than 45 minutes, was the introduction of Kendra Amaral, who recently was hired as Wilmington’s Assistant Town Manager. “We had some very strong candidates but Kendra really brings a lot of experience,” said Town Manager Jeff Hull, who took over last week for Michael Caira.”I am very pleased and think she will be a great addition to the town.” Amaral said she is looking forward to serving the town, and believes she there are potential changes that can be made. “I think it is a great opportunity to help out in Human Resources policies and bring things up to date, making things…

Selectmen Show Ties to Fighting Breast Cancer

During Tuesday's Board of Selectmen meeting, members sported pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It was a small gesture, but a meaningful one for Wilmington selectmen. During Tuesday night’s meeting all board members and Town Manager Jeff Hull sported pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “I lost a mother at a young age to breast cancer,” said board member Michael McCoy. “It’s something that has touched everyone in this room in one way or another.” It isn’t the only time board members have coordinated outfits for a cause. Earlier this year selectmen wore blue for autism awareness. Judy O’Connell echoed McCoy’s sentiments and said she was glad the board could play a small part in breast cancer awareness. “I know all of us have been impacted by this insidious disease,” said O’Connell. “I’ve personally lost people from the …

Packed Agenda Includes Public Hearing, Manager Contract

Board of Selectmen meeting slated for Monday features long list of key items.

Monday night's Board of Selectmen meeting features one of the busiest agendas in recent months as board members say goodbye to a community staple and tackle a variety of key items. First on the docket is a public hearing for the intersection improvement project at Glen Road, Middlesex Ave., and Wildwood Street. The project has been in the works for several years as the state will pay for the project. In comments to Patch earlier this year, Department of Public Works Superintendent Don Onusseit said if construction begins this spring as planned, the project could be done by the end of the summer. Women of Wilmington president Jomarie O'Mahony is the next appointment, updating board members on the group's programs and requesting to conduct …

Bond, Donuts and Public Comments Highlight Monday Meeting

Monday night's Board of Selectmen meeting ended with a heated Public Comments exchange.

After discussing several items including a new Dunkin’ Donuts and the town’s bond rating for construction on the new high school, Monday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting ended with a heated exchange with an audience member. The meeting began as members approved a new flammable license for Charles River Laboratories, and continued with the issuance of a Common Victualer Licnese for Dunkin’ Donuts on Concord Street. Next on the agenda was discussion about Wilmington’s bond rating, which was issued as AA+ by Standard & Poor’s. Town Manager Michael Caira said seven bids came in for companies willing to finance the project, and Guggenheim Securities was selected as the lowest bidder with an interest rate of 3.28 percent. “We’re generally …
