Clean-up at Olin Superfund Site Still Years Away
During last night's informational town meeting the public was told it would be years before clean-up began or results from the state's childhood cancer study were complete.
Thirteen years later, the Olin Chemical Superfund Site still has years to go before clean-up is considered, said Heather Ford, consultant with Nobis, during last night's town informational meeting at Wilmington Middle School. While 242 known contaminants have been found on Olin's South Wilmington location, the ground- and surface-water, site and sediment surveys are still not complete and won't be for at least another two years. Meanwhile, more private wells near the site, on Cook Avenue, are being considered as possibly contaminated and the child cancer study, started over a decade ago, has also lost funding.
