A federal grant has enabled state police in Massachusetts to implement specialized enforcement in June.
Texting while driving has been illegal in Massachusetts since 2010, but police around the country have said the law is difficult to enforce. With the help of a federal grant, Massachusetts State Police will begin a statewide crackdown on the illegal practice in June. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the state a $275,000 federal grant to increase enforcement of the Safe Driving Law, which bans the sending, typing or reading of electronic messages to or from handheld devices while operating a motor vehicle and a complete ban on the use of all handheld electronic devices by junior operators while behind the wheel, according to a state police press statement Tuesday. Injuries reported, rescue crews on scene.
State Police and rescue personnel are at the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident in the northbound lane of Interstate 93 near the Route 125 Exit. Initial reports indicate multiple injuries. The extent of those injuries was not immediately known. Expect significant delays traveling north on I-93, as the situation is being handled. Delays in the southbound side are also possible due to the curioistity factor. Check with the Wilmington Patch Commute Page for traffic on I-93 and other main arteries in eastern Mass. updated every five minutes. Victim died at the scene after head-on collision on Route 125.
State Police have released new details and identified the driver killed in a head on crash Sunday night on Route 125. Roberto Leon, 47, of Andover, was killed when the 2013 Toyota Corolla he was driving collided head-on with a 2004 Chevrolet K1500 sport utility vehicle. The crash took place around 8:30 p.m. on a section of Route 125 near the North Reading line. According to State Police, a preliminary investigation shows the Corolla crossed the center line and narrowly missed hitting another vehicle before crashing into the SUV. Investigators are still trying to determine why Leon's vehicle crossed into the other lane. One person dead, two injured in Sunday night accident.
One person is dead and two are hospitalized after a horrific head-on crash Sunday night on Route 125. According to State Police, the accident took place around 8:30 p.m. on a section of Route 125 near the North Reading town line. According to a Wilmington Police report, the vehicles involved were a Toyota Corolla and a Chevy Tahoe. State Police were first on the scene, followed closely by crews from the Wilmington and Andover Fire Departments. Rescue workers had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the top of the Corolla and extract the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A police chase early Wednesday morning has ended with a dozen charges against a Wilmington man, including allegations he struck a Sheriff's deputy while drunk.
A driver that originally drew the attention of police on I-95 in Danvers early Wednesday morning was eventually arrested more than an hour later after a police chase through three towns that included allegedly striking a sheriff’s deputy. Paul Tierney, 34, of Wilmington faces 12 charges, including his third charge of operating under the influence of liquor and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The incident began at 1:27 p.m. in Danvers on I-95 southbound near the Ferncroft rotary. A trooper spotted a red Kia Sorrento and went to stop it. The State Police have announced increased patrols in light of Andover's fatal accident.
In light of a crash in Andover that killed an elderly couple last week, the State Police Barracks will be focusing on Route 125 immediately. In a press release sent Thursday, State Police said effective immediately, they will be directing a selective enforcement patrol to focus exclusively on Route 125 through Wilmington, Andover, and North Andover. "This action is being taken in the interest of public safety in response to traffic concerns raised by community members," the release said. Several Andover community members have said a set of lights is needed at the stretch of road where the couple was killed Friday.
