Parents used a horrific time in American history to teach their children lessons they will always hold.

This week marks the 11th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2011. It’s hard to believe that so many years have passed since the events of that tragic day. Whether or not you are a parent, it’s difficult to look back at that day and not think about how it has changed the lives of children all over America.  As Americans, we all lost something on that fateful day. Countless families suffered tragic and unexpected losses. Those who weren’t touched personally still looked on in horror as fellow Americans lost their lives to the most shocking terrorist attack to ever take place. 9/11 Attacks Left Personal Impact on Wilmington Firefighters

Members of the Wilmington Fire Department lost several friends during the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, left a lasting impact on nearly every American. For many members of the Wilmington Fire Department, that infamous day had an extremely personal impact. Wilmington department members stayed at a Queens firehouse several times in the years leading up to September 11, forming bonds with many firefighters each trip. In the aftermath of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers, 19 members of Squad 288 and Haz Mat 1 were killed, six of which Wilmington firefighters had become friendly with. Sunday is the marks the 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, and event that will forever be engrained in American history. Wilmington officials have a ceremony planned for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Women of Wilmington members organized a clothing drive, and those whose lives were touched that day have been reflecting on the attacks one decade later.  Christie Coombs, whose husband, Jeff, was killed as a passenger on one of the planes that flew into the World Trade Center, sat down for an interview with Patch.
