The governor will appoint an interim sheriff until a special election is held in 2012. The winner will serve out the remaining four years in the term.
Governor Deval Patrick has not yet considered a replacement for Middlesex Sheriff James DiPaola, preferring to wait until the family has had time to bury their husband and father before mulling over his choices, according to an official in the governor's office. Special Sheriff John Granara is currently in charge of the Sheriff's department and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Granara will retain control of the department until a replacement is named by the governor, according to Sheriff Chief of Staff and Malden City Councilor Gary Christenson. James Miceli wins nearly two to one in state representative race.
Jim Miceli will be back on Beacon Hill as the State Representative of the 19th Middlesex District for another two years after defeating his opponent Republican Mario Marchese in a clean sweep of around 2 to 1. "Some victories are sweeter than others, and let me tell you this was the sweetest," said Miceli celebrating at Rocco's Restaurant in Wilmington. "This guy ran the dirtiest campaign I've seen in 33 years." In Wilmington, Miceli beat Marchese 4,721 to 2,621 with Precinct 3 not returning any results because neither candidate is on the ballot there. Voter turn-out was "very heavy" according to the Town Clerk's office with about 57 percent of voters making it to the polls on November 2. There was no love lost between the two candidates …
