Nominate your Whiz Kid to matthew.schooley@patch.com.
Each week, Wilmington Patch will select a Whiz Kid of the Week. But this week we are selecting multiple kids for the honor. This month, the 11 Wilmington High School students earned AP Scholar Awards in honor of their AP Exam achievements. The AP, also known as the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program, offers college-level courses to students who are still in high school. The curriculum is often rigorous, but these Wilmington standouts met the challenge, performing at a sufficiently high level to earn the Scholar Award. We recognize the following students as Whiz Kids for earning the AP Scholar with Distinction Award: The following earned an AP Scholar with Honor Award: The following students earned an AP Scholar Award:

The 2010-11 Wilmington hoops campaign began on Wednesday with the Wildcats falling to North Andover in a 62-58 nail biter. Wilmington had trailed the entire game but a fourth quarter surge gave the Wildcats a late 52-49 lead. "It was there for the taking," Wildcats coach Joseph Maiella said. "It's tough to lose a game when your kids play hard like that." The defending Cape Ann League champions, North Andover, controlled the pace of the game, leading by nine at halftime, but the Knights allowed Wilmington to snag the lead in the second half. Wilmington came out of the locker room on an 18-11 run in the third quarter to make it a four-point game going into the fourth. "I told them in the locker room, it's one possession at a time; that's how…

Wilmington lost to Medford last night 6-1.
The Wilmington High School's girls ice-hockey team took a big hit on Wednesday, losing 6-1 to Medford at Ristuccia Arena. Forward Chloe Castellano scored the lone goal for the Wildcats, who fall to 1-1 in the season after taking a 4-2 win on the road against Martha's Vineyard on Dec. 10. Wilmington quickly dug itself a hole after it fell behind early when goalkeeper Bridget Santos allowed three scores in the first four and a half minutes of play. The first came from a loop around from behind the net that a Medford player dropped in, followed 10 seconds later by a score after some confusion in the crease. Shortly after, Medford managed to sneak one by Santos from the high post. Despite the three-goal deficit, the Wildcats did not let it …

Shawsheen Valley Technical High School earned a Gold Medalist standing with the Columbia Scholastic Press Association this year.
Shawsheen Valley Technical High School received high marks for their literary magazine, "Ramblings." The Columbia Scholastic Press Association recognized the regional high school as a Gold Medalist in the annual CSPA's Medalist Critiques. Senior Sarah Middleton was also recognized, along with only five other students nationwide, for her illustrations and given a "Certificate of Merit." Every year, CSPA invites student newspapers, magazines and other publications to submit their work for critique. CSPA appoints a judge who uses a point-system to determine the achievement level. "Ramblings" was critiqued in three areas: organization, content and design with the maximum possible points of 1,000: 500 for content, 350 for design and 150 for …

After-school activities still on tonight.
The Wilmington High School was under lockdown today after a student brought an Airsoft BB gun to campus, read a statement from Wilmington Public Schools Superintendent Joanne Benton. The student showed off the gun, which looked like a 9-MM handgun, to other students and faculty members and the high school was immediately placed on lockdown. The incident was quickly "resolved" and all students were dismissed from school early. An automated message from Principal Eric Tracy was placed to parents to inform them the gun in question was just a BB gun. "It is believed this is an isolated incident," read the statement from Benton. All after-school activities are still going on as scheduled tonight. An earlier statement from Benton read there …
