The Lady Wildcats dominated play for much of the game but couldn't come up with the tying goal after falling behind in the first half.
The Wilmington girls soccer team dominated scoring chances throughout its North Division 2 final tilt against Belmont. But in the end, it was the Marauders who breezed to the sectional title thanks to a wind-aided goal. Belmont’s Corrine Ognibene lofted a shot high in the air from about 40 yards out, just hoping to put the ball on net. But with goalie Kim Woods off of her line, she slowly retreated towards the goal line before she realized the wind gave it enough of a boost that it was destined for the back of the net. Though Woods leapt into the air to try and knock it out of harm's way, the ball soared into the left side of the net. Ognibene’s goal gave Belmont a 1-0 edge at the 23:28 mark of the first half, and that was all the team …

Wilmington clipped Belmont, 3-1, on Tuesday and hopes it is the first of many statement games.
The Wilmington girls soccer team made a statement on Tuesday. But the Lady Wildcats hope they have plenty more to say in the upcoming weeks. Alex Bischoff notched a pair of goals and Holly Niemiec put home a tally of her own as Wilmington toppled Belmont 3-1, a team the locals had never previous beaten. Upcoming games provide the Wildcats more chances to make further statements, playing against teams like Winchester and Arlington, the team that knocked Wilmington out of the postseason last year. “We’ve had chats about how this is really our chance to prove that our record is not just a fluke,” said head coach Sue Hendee, whose team is 7-1-1 on the year. “We feel we are a team that should be looked at. We’re playing well and we look forward…

Stoneham and Wilmington split Small School Division title.
The Wilmington girls soccer team is new to the Middlesex League. But the Lady Wildcats have already made a name for themselves. On Wednesday, head coach Sue Hendee's charges welcomed Burlington to town and notched a lopsided 3-0 victory at Alumni Stadium Thanks to the win and Stoneham's loss to Wakefield, Wilmington earned a share of the Middlesex League Small School Division regular season crown. Both teams have league marks of 7-1-2. Against Burlington, the Wildcats were dominant on offense throughout, outshooting the visitors 18-1. Rachel Grabar took a pass from Kaitlyn Curley and gave her team a 1-0 edge at the 35 minute mark. That's how the score stayed at halftime, but the Wildcats built on their edge in the second half. Jackie …

Congratulations to the Lady Wildcats. What a great ride and what a great group of student athletes! Sue Hendee is right, if the girls had a chance to play and practice on artificial turf things quite possible could have turned out differently. It is a much faster game on turf. Having watched the girls and boys play at the newly renovated Woburn High School, I can only hope that things move …   more ›
