Why Did Wilmington's Carnival Close Before the Fourth?

Fourth of July Committee chairman Scott Garrant provides the answer to the question on several readers' minds.

Summertime means five days of Fourth of July fun for Wilmington residents, but the festivities are normally wrapped up with little action happening on Independence Day itself. And with this year's Fourth festivities finished, several readers asked the question about why the town's carnival packed up and left town a day before the actual Fourth of July holiday. Wilmington Fourth of July Committee chairman Scott Garrant provided the answer. "The carnival was not open on July 4th as the Fun on Fourth Celebration ended on the morning of the 4th," said Garrant. "Had the July 3 fireworks display been postponed to July 4th, the carnival would have remained. Historically, July 4th is not a busy day for the carnival since many families host or …

Thank you so much to the committee, all of the workers and volunteers! My family had an amazing time at all of the festivities! We appreciate all of your hard work and had plenty of fun and family time. Looking Back at Wilmington Fourth Festivities

Patch had you covered throughout Fourth of July week, so be sure to check out all of the fun in case you missed anything.

The Fourth of July has now passed in Wilmington, but it's not too late to enjoy the festivities. Wilmington Patch was around Town Common throughout the week, and you can relive the Independence Day celebration by checking out all the articles from the week. Activities started on Friday as the carnival opened for business and several other events took place as well. The sun was shining and residents lined up right at the opening of the event to get their tickets for the carnival. Not everything went as planned on Friday night, though in the end it could have been much worse. A Kiwanis Club deep frier went up in flames, bringing the Wilmington Fire Department to the scene. No one was injured during the grease fire, and firefighters were able…

A Slice of Wilmington

Fourth Provides Big-Time Fun and Small Town Feel

Wilmington love Independence Day, evident after a successful five day celebration.

Ok, let’s face it. Wilmington loves the Fourth of July. Yes, there are lots of surrounding towns that celebrate the holiday but, honestly, few are as passionate and as dedicated to Fun on the Fourth as Wilmington. While some towns host fireworks and others host carnivals, Wilmington’s celebration is a full five days of community based fun including everything from breakfasts and dinners to concerts and sports tournaments. Let’s face the facts. Where else but Wilmington’s can you enjoy a doll carriage parade, petting zoo, three legged race, tug of war, hula hoop contest, sack race, bucket brigade, carnival and family fireworks all in one day? It’s hard to say exactly why Wilmington’s Fourth of July Pride has grown so much over the years but…

Fourth of July Festivities Come to Sparkling Close [VIDEO]

Wilmington wrapped up five days of holiday fun with a spectacular fireworks display on Tuesday night.

What a week it was in Wilmington. Once again the town's annual week of Fourth of July festivities was a huge success, with thousands of people coming to a long list of events over a five day span. And the grand finale came on Tuesday night with the final night of the carnival, and of course the spectacular fireworks display put on by Tony Gentile and his crew. There wasn't a seat to be had on Town Common as residents packed the grass for the fireworks, and closed out the year's festivities with a loud round of applause.

VIDEO: Evil Empire Strikes For Bed Race Win

Despite strong efforts by the competition, Evil Empire toppled defending champion Arlene Ave. to earn hospital bed crown at the annual Wilmington Fourth of July event.

Wilmington has a new king of hospital bed racing. Kind of. Evil Empire, led by Lou Cimaglia, Jr., who was a domainant racer several years ago as a member of Local Heroes, surprised its fellow competitors by showing up to Monday's race and running away with the coveted championship and all of the bragging rights that go along with it. The squad needed to win back-to-back races to dethrone defending champion Arlene Ave. Evil Empire did just that, winning each competition easily to snag the title that is earned every Fourth of July. Among the teams left in the dust were Wilmington Patch, Women of Wilmington and Wilmington Moms Club, along with the current Local Heroes team which included Lou's brother, Nick Cimaglia. For those unfamiliar with…

So have momma macky mack kiss you goodnight, and you can dream all you want about being …   more ›

Behind the Scenes of Wilmington's Fireworks [VIDEO]

A video look at what the town does to set up for its two fireworks displays, which are well known around the region.

You "ohhhh" and "ahhhh" as they light up the sky in honor of the Fourth of July. But have you ever wondered what it takes to put on a spectacular fireworks display? In Wilmington, two firework displays mean plenty of man hours in advance to get ready for the show. Tony Gentile and his crew, made up largely of fellow Newton residents, spent much of Saturday preparing plastic tubes and filling them with explosives along the Wilmington High School football field. Then on Saturday night, the group put on the first of Wilmington's two fireworks shows, firing off several hundred shells. But that is nothing compared to Tuesday night's 30-minute display that includes about 3,000 shells and tubes of explosives lined up for close to 100 feet. And …

Fourth Organizers Ask for Help Preserving Grass

Fourth of July Committee asks residents not to spread out blankets on Town Common too early on Tuesday.

Wilmington residents will be packing Town Common early on Tuesday for the fireworks display that serves as the finale of a week jam packed with family events. But event organizers are asking residents not to set up shop too soon. Fourth of July Committee chairman Scott Garrant asked residents to be considerate of the grass on Town Common when they make plans for Tuesday night's fireworks. "Due to the high temperatures and concern for the grass on the Town Common, blankets cannot be placed on the Common until after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3," said Garrant. "If you are attending the events on Monday, blankets may be used but, if you plan to leave your blanket on the Common, it must be left folded and placed on top of a chair after the …

A look at the scene from Saturday's Fourth of July fun on Wilmington Town Common.

There was something for everyone on Town Common Saturday. Family Fun Day, the highlight of the town's annual Independence Day celebration for many residents, took place throughout the day and capped off with the first of two fireworks displays. Young residents had the chance to walk in the doll and bike parade, take a pony ride, play some whiffle ball and much more. There were activities run from morning to night and for much of the day families could purchase discounted tickets to the carnival. Be sure to check out Patch's coverage from Friday's festivities, and we'll have more photos and videos in upcoming days.
