Chief Ed Bradbury receives grant at Monday Board of Selectmen meeting.
Wilmington Fire Chief Ed Bradbury knew his department received another $10,000 grant thanks to the support of local residents. But it became official Monday night when he got his hands on an oversized check from Liberty Mutual. The town outworked others in its size category and won a second straight fire safety grant. Monday at the Board of Selectmen meeting, Bradbury accepted the check and talked about the excitement of being able to purchase new equipment. “I think it’s amazing that we’ve had folks participate to the level they have,” said Bradbury. “We’ve had quite a bit of feedback from just the residents. Fire department earns $10,000 thanks to resident support.
Reader Barbara Alevras may have been joking when she wrote on the Wilmington Patch Facebook page, but it's not too much of an exaggeration. "Liberty Mutual should just automatically write a check to Wilmington when they have those contests," she posted. "We reign supreme in these community support contests." Alevras was one of many Wilmington residents excited by the news that Wilmington won its second straight Liberty Mutual fire safety grant. The $10,000 sum was earned because more Wilmington residents took the fire safety quiz in droves and became one of 10 national winners. Town needs resident help to improve chances.
Wilmington has a proven background in winning grants from Liberty Mutual. To continue that trend with the most recent competition, the town is need of an increase in resident support. The town hopes to receive $10,000 in a fire safety promotion. Last year, Wilmington received the grant along with two Bring Back the Fourth grants from Liberty Mutual that helped fun the most recent fireworks display. This year's contest requires residents to complete a short quiz on the Liberty Mutual website. This would be the fifth overall grant Wilmington has received in just over one year.
