The 4-alarm fire at Avalon Oaks on Feb. 8 made headlines and sent plumes of smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles. But almost two weeks later, as the buzz surrounding the fire has faded, the 36 people made homeless by the blaze must still deal with the aftermath. A Facebook Page -- www.facebook.com/FebruaryBlizzardFireVictims -- has been started to gather resources to try and help the families impacted. The page was started by Barbara Warren-Sica but has quickly developed into a clearinghouse, of sorts, for various resources, suggestions and ideas. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled police don't need a search warrant to look at a cellphone's call list after arresting the phone's owner. As courts around the country grapple with the issue, tell us: is this reasonable search and seizure?
What's the difference between personal information and correspondence you have physically stored in your home, and similar information that's on your cellphone? And what should police have access to without a warrant? It's a question that courts across the nation are dealing with it and one that arose here in Massachusetts on Wednesday, when the Supreme Judicial Court ruled that police don't need a search warrant to look at the call list of a person's cellphone during while searching that person's personal property after an arrest. However, in writing the court's opinion for Commonwealth vs. Demetrius A. Some employers are asking for login information of potential job seekers.
Imagine utilizing all of Facebook's privacy settings to the maximum so that only your closest family and friends can see your personal profile. Now imagine interviewing for a job and having that employer ask for your login information in order to get a better look at your personal life. That's exactly what some hiring companies are doing across the country, according to a Boston.com report Tuesday. But the legality of the move is being called into question, and is actually being brought to the forefront in such states as Illinois and Maryland, where proposed legislation would forbid public companies from asking for such information, according to Boston.com.
