School Committee Election Could Be A Six-Person Race

One candidate takes out nomination papers for three different offices.

Just when it looked like the Board of Selectmen race might be the most interesting in the upcoming Municipal Election, the School Committee now looks as thought it ready to take center stage. Three additional potential candidates --Jennifer DeFeo, Jennifer Spear and Donna Leone -- took out nomination papers this week, joining Kathleen Carroll, Julie Broussard and incumbent Margaret Kane. This creates the potential for a six-way race (or more) for three seats on the committee. DeFeo employed the interesting strategy of taking out nomination papers for Housing Authority and Shawsheen Tech School Committee, in addition to the Wilmington School Committee. School Committee Hopefuls Talk Technology, MCAS

Three candidates for two seats on the Wilmington School Committee debated the issues last night on WCTV.

The three candidates for two seats on the School Committee last night discussed the School Department's needs and what they can bring to the table as potential members. Incumbent Mario Marchese, Mary Jane Byrnes and Manny Mulas offered their perspectives on what the most pressing need is for Wilmington Public Schools. "Right now, the new high school building is the priority," said Marchese. "The (current building) was built in the 1950s it has had minor modifications but we know right now ... we have teachers who don’t have classrooms who float around, it's undersized for today," he said.
