Where to Recycle the Hazardous Stuff
A quick guide to recycling electronics, paints and other dicey household waste in and near Wilmington.
Trash and recycling usually goes smoothly in Wilmington. To judge by the blue bins and barrels that line our sidewalks every week, jam-packed with the usual newspapers, bottles, cans, plastic, etc., people are hip to the system set up by the city, and they utilize it. But the recycling process becomes much murkier when it comes to the more destructive stuff. What should be done with batteries? What about paint? Where do all the broken mobile phones go? No-Pest Strips? There's a long list (see PDF at right) of hazardous household items and electronics that should not go into a landfill (I mean, nail polish remover -- who knew?) Wilmington's Hazardous Waste Day isn't until May, so hold on to your motor oil, pesticides and fluorescent bulbs …

Good point, Jill, thanks for pointing that out -- I believe most grocery stores will recycle plastic bags (grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, etc). The receptacles are usually located right by the soda can refund machines.   more ›
