Chamber Race Serves as a 'Town Wide Event'

Executive Director Nancy Vallee praised all of the groups involved in Sundays 5k and half marathon.

You don’t have to be a finely tuned runner to participate in the Chamber of Commerce’s road race on Sunday. But if you are, it’s still a great race to run. More than 500 participants will take the streets for the eighth annual 5k and half marathon on Sunday morning, bringing together residents from all walks of life for a race that combines competitive fitness and community interaction. “Everyone is doing the race for a different reason,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nancy Vallee. “You have people volunteering, people walking for their own reasons, and a lot of local gyms who have been training people for six months for this. Then you have the business community who has helped sponsor the race. That’s just the community …

Wilmington On Display at Friday Spinners Game

Lowell's minor league baseball team holds Wilmington Day on Friday night and Stephen King will also be in attendance at the game.

Wilmington residents have had the chance to see Michael Caira in action as Town Manager for more than two decades. On Friday, they’ll have the chance to see what skills he has on the pitcher’s mound. Caira will throw out the first pitch at tonight’s Lowell Spinners game as part of the festivities for Wilmington Day at LeLacheur Park, which begins with a dinner at 5:30 p.m. for those who purchased tickets through the Rotary Club and Chamer of Commerce. “I don’t really know what to expect from Mike’s first pitch,” said Chamber of Commerce President Mike Champoux. “Though I didn’t know him back then, I’ve heard that he was quite the athlete in his younger days. I suspect it’ll make it over home plate.” In addition to Caira’s pitch, the state …

The Chamber is offering five scholarships totaling $5,000 to the Class of 2012 from Wilmington High School and Shawsheen Technical High School, thanks in large part to proceeds from the annual half marathon and 5k run/walk. “Part of the Chamber’s mission is to enhance the quality of life within or community by supporting civic and social welfare,” said Executive Director Nancy Vallee. “The Chamber is not only a resource for the business community, it is also a resource for the entire community.” Three of the scholarships will be provided to students pursuing a …

Networking With a Twist

Chamber of Commerce members participate in speed networking event.

These days life happens fast. We have grown accustomed to fast food, fast lanes, express checkout and, yes, even speed dating. Now, as if all of that wasn’t fast enough, it’s time to add another fast paced event to the list; speed networking. On Tuesday, members of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, along with members from the Reading/North Reading Chamber participated in a unique speed networking event at the Great American Tavern in North Reading. Based on the same concept as speed dating, speed networking is, as Chamber President Nancy Vallee explained, “a fun, exciting and effective way to make a lot of initial connections in a short time.”  With each session timed by a two minute warning bell and a four minute cutoff, the event is …

Celebrating the Fourth ... in June

Chamber of Commerce and Fourth of July Committee host fundraiser for fireworks display.

It’s only May. But that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about the Fourth of July. That’s because the Fourth of July Committee and Chamber of Commerce are preparing to host residents and business owners during the annual July 4th fundraising luncheon. The event takes place on Wednesday, June 1, at the Knights of Columbus, with the proceeds from the $15 tickets going towards the town’s fireworks display. “(The Fourth of July) is an event that is greatly anticipated by thousands of residents each year,” said 4th of July Committee chairman Scott Garrant. “After what was a long winter and a less than terrific spring, this is a chance for attendees to look ahead to the summer months and the fun and excitement of the 4th of July …

Friberg Wins Chamber of Commerce Logo Contest

Chamber will print decals featuring local man's creation to display on members' doors.

After celebrating a successful first 50 years, the Chamber of Commerce thought it was only fitting to go into the next half century with a new look. That’s why for the past several months, the group accepted submissions for a new logo that would provide a more fresh and with the times symbol of business. In addition to opening the contest to the public, the Chamber also worked with Wilmington High School’s visual arts department as students made up the majority of entries in the contest. A total of 143 entries in the contest came before the Chamber’s selection committee. Though the winner was not from the pool of high school entries, three students were awarded honorable mention. Sara Pudvelis, a sophomore, Ryan Cocca, also a sophomore, …

A Very Happy Anniversary

Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 50th annual luncheon in style with guest speaker Dick Hoyt.

The Chamber of Commerce was having a birthday, so it was only fitting the group invited a few friends to celebrate. During the 50th annual Chamber luncheon on Thursday, a variety of business owners and town officials came to dine and listen to motivational speaker Dick Hoyt, who was a long-time resident of North Reading. Hoyt’s son, Rick, was born with cerebral palsy and was written off at birth. Doctors said Dick was best putting his son into an institution, but instead, Dick watched as his son touched the lives of countless individuals across the world despite being stricken to a wheelchair. Utilizing a piece of technology designed specifically for him, Rick is able to talk. He grew up and graduated high school and college, and now lives…
