More than 1,000 residents and police officers from across the state packed Wilmington Town Common for a candlelight vigil in honor of slain MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.
On Saturday night, residents said goodbye to one of their own and police officers from across the state saluted the bravery of a member of the thin blue line who made the ultimate sacrifice. Slain Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police Officer Sean Collier's body was brought down Church Street past thousands who lined the street surrounding Wilmington Town Common and waved American flags as a part of an emotional goodbye. Collier, a Wilmington native and Somerville resident, was honored during a candlelight vigil following the procession. Members of the Collier family attended the event, and sobbed at times as their loved one was recalled. "(Sean) is such an amazing man. A better man than I will ever be. And he was taken from us too …

Thousands pack Wilmington Town Common to pay tribute to a hometown hero.
More than 1,000 residents, friends and law enforcement personnel from throughout Eastern Massachusetts packed the Wilmington Town Common for a candlelight vigil Saturday night to bid farewell and say thank you to a hometown hero. Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police Officer Sean Collier, a 2004 graduate of Wilmington High School, was gunned down as he sat in his cruiser Thursday night on a Cambridge Street, allegedly by brothers Tamerlan and Dzokhar Tsarnaev, the same men investigators believe are responsible for the fatal bombing attack at Monday's Boston Marathon. Before the start of Saturday's vigil, a hearse carrying Collier's body drove down Church Street, shut down to traffic during the ceremony. The road was lined with …

One resident's hopes for a community event will become a reality as it will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday on Town Common.
When Stacie Murphy reached out to the local community last week for support planning a candlelight vigil in memory of the lives lost at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, she had high hopes. She knew that Wilmington residents were touched by the tragedy and anticipated that they would appreciate an opportunity to come together to support the Newtown, Conn., community. What she didn’t expect, however, was the overwhelming number of responses she received from organizations and individuals throughout the town. As a result, the vigil will take place on Saturday at 6 p.m. on Town Common. “From the messages I’ve received from people in our community, there's no doubt to me that Wilmington is supporting Newtown,” she said. “We are asking …

Stacie Murphy said she needs the help of fellow volunteers to organize an event honoring the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Since the news of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School broke last week, it seems like people everywhere are searching for a way to make a difference. Not since the September 11th attacks has it seemed so important for people to seek comfort and, at the same time, comfort those around them. In Wilmington, one of those people is Stacie Murphy. A lifetime resident, Murphy is an active member of the local community as well as the chairman of the Housing Authority. She knows what it’s like to be a part of the Wilmington community. She also knows how many people in Wilmington have been touched by the tragedy in Newtown and hopes that she can find a way to bring solace to both communities. “I don’t have any children but I love kids and …
