Brush Fire Knocked Down on Salem Street

According to scanner reports, flames broke out just after 8 p.m. and involved a tire pile as well.

According to scanner reports, Wilmington firefighters were battling a large brush fire on Salem Street just after 8 p.m. on Monday night. Initial calls came in just before 8:30 p.m., reporting a large amount of flames at 900 Salem Street. Scanner transmissions indicated that the fire spread to a tire pile as well. Multiple mutual aid crews also reportedly responded to the scene, where heavy smoke could be spotted. At about 8:50 p.m., command indicated that the main body of the fire was knocked down. Just after 9 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Rick McClellan said the fire was nothing major, but that a pile of tires and mattresses that were illegally dumped caught fire. He added that the fire was knocked down and crews were just wetting it down. …

Brush Fires Along I-93 Snarling Afternoon Traffic

Firefighters may have the flames under control shortly, but residual traffic backup is expected to remain during rush hour.

Brush fires along I-93 in Wilmington and surrounding towns have traffic snarled as of late Monday afternoon. Reports indicated that there are currently brush fires in Medford in the Middlesex Fells, in Stoneham along Route 93 and another in Woburn on Route 93 at the Commerce Way. Wilmington Deputy Fire Chief John Brown said there were multiple small brush fires in Wilmington at the Route 129 exit. Travelers can expect delays. According to one Wilmington Patch Facebook follower, "Traffic on I-93 South goes back at Least to Medford from Wilmington." Update: Half Acre Brush Fire Controlled on Butters Row

Lt. Gary Donovan returned to scene on Wednesday to control hot spots.

Update: Wilmington Fire Lieutenant Gary Donovan said the flames spread to about half of an acre behind 45 Butters Row at about 11 p.m. on Tuesday night. The fire was controlled by just before 1 a.m., and no structures were impacted during the incident. Donovan was among the firefighters who returned to the scene around noon on Wednesday to control hot spots that had developed. "Conditions have been very dry," said Donovan. "We have no permits because of it. We're not sure how the fire got started. But hopefully we’ll get some rain and we won’t have to deal with brush fires for a while."
