Wilmington High School beat Franklin for a second straight year in the Division 2 state title game to win the program's second championship in as many years.
The Wilmington High School boys hockey team had so much fun winning at TD Garden last year, they figured they’d do it again. Thanks to a 4-0 victory over Franklin on Sunday afternoon, the Wildcats sealed a second straight Division 2 state championship win. “Last year, it took a lot longer to set in,” said junior Cody McGowan, who scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway with 1:27 remaining in the first period. “This year, we’re already feeling it. We’re on cloud nine.” While the game ended up another lopsided notch in Wilmington’s belt, it could have been different if not for the goaltending of junior Drew Foley. Wilmington High School fell behind Boston Latin, 1-0, early in Friday night's game before vaulting ahead and earning a 4-1 win.
Even after a 5-2 first round win, there wasn't cause for much celebration in the Wilmington High School locker room on Tuesday night. Friday night at Stoneham Arena, however, was a different story. "Last game we won, but back in the locker room it was like a loss. Everyone was not talking, down on themselves because we knew we played bad," said McDonough. "This game, we were celebrating because it was a good game and we knew we played well. But we can always build on our game."
