Wilmington plays Franklin at 1:30 p.m. at TD Garden and a win would seal a second consecutive state championship win.
The Wilmington boys hockey team is back on the biggest stage in Massachusetts high school hockey for a second straight year. And the Wildcats are ready for a repeat performance. In a rematch of last year’s Division 2 state title game, Wilmington squares off against Franklin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday on the ice of TD Garden in Boston. With a win, the Wildcats would seal a dominating postseason run with a second consecutive state championship. “We knew coming into the season that we had a lot of skill, and our goal was to get back and win at The Garden,” said senior captain Cam Owens. “Last year we didn’t know what if we were going to be able to win it all, but we were hopeful. I won’t say that we knew we’d be back this year, but we had a …

With much focus on his linemate, Cam Owens, McDonough has turned into a potent scorer for the defending champion boys hockey team.
Earlier this postseason, Wilmington High School boys hockey coach Steve Scanlon lightheartedly begged opponents to focus their defensive attention on Cam Owens, the leading scorer in program history. The reason was simple. He knows that would leave open Brendan McDonough, another Wildcat skater who’s turned into a potent top line scorer. “Key on Cam all you want. Someone’s open,” Scanlon said with a smile after his team’s 4-1 win over Boston Latin in the North Division 2 quarterfinal round. “When (McDonough) is on, he’s the whole package … He’s certainly a force. Cam’s a player, but people forget we have a ‘1’ and a ‘1A.’” McDonough is a veteran player for Wilmington, even though he’s only a junior. He was a member of the state …

Wilmington dominated every phase of the game on Monday night en route to a 7-2 victory that assured the Wildcats a chance at their second straight state title.
The champs are rolling, and it's bad news for seemingly everyone in Division 2. Thanks to a convincing 7-2 win over Danvers in the North Division 2 final on Monday night, Wilmington High School is within one victory of a second straight state championship. Brendan McDonough continued his meteoric rise as he notched a hat trick in less than two periods of action to lead the way for the Wildcats. Dylan DiNatale, Luke Foley, Steve DeFuria, and Jake Rogers also joined the scoring barrage. As a result, the team will skate on the ice of TD Garden on Sunday, though the game-time has not yet been announced. "For the program it's our ultimate goal," said head coach Steve Scanlon. "They dream of winning a title. Then to actually have gone and win …

The Wilmington High School boys hockey team thumped Danvers, 7-2, thanks to a Brendan McDonough hat trick and will play for the Division 2 state title on Sunday.
Wilmington High School boys hockey coach Steve Scanlon said after his team's North Division 2 semifinal win that the Wildcats played just about as well as they could play. Then on Monday, the defending champions found another gear. Thanks in part to a Brendan McDonough hat trick, Wilmington cruised past Danvers on Monday night in Lowell at the Tsongas Center, winning a second consecutive North Division 2 title. As a result, the team will play on Sunday, March 17, at TD Garden in Boston for a state title. "The goal way back at the beginning of the year was the kids wanted to be back at The Garden," said Scanlon, whose team's celebration was a bit more tame than last year's. "They're a little more experienced, so they know the ultimate prize…

Wilmington skates against Danvers at 6 p.m. on the ice of the Tsongas Center in Lowell.
It’s a game the Wilmington High School boys hockey team has been in before. And the Wildcats are hoping for the same result. Wilmington skates in the North Division 2 title game for a second straight season, hoping to continue its quest for a repeat state championship performance. The Wildcats will take on Danvers at 6 p.m. on Monday night on the ice of Lowell’s Tsongas Center. “It’s exciting,” said head coach Steve Scanlon. “The kids are pumped to play. The guys that have been there before, it helps a lot. It’s always a thrill to play up there.” Following last week’s drubbing of Lincoln-Sudbury, Scanlon gave his players two days off before returning to practice. After several days of practices, he gave the team one more day off on …

They've been there before. And on Friday night, it showed. The Wilmington High School boys hockey team, chocked full of veteran skaters with state championship rings to prove it, wasn't rattled when it trailed Boston Latin 1-0 in the second period of Friday night's North Division 2 quarterfinal game. Wilmington High School fell behind Boston Latin, 1-0, early in Friday night's game before vaulting ahead and earning a 4-1 win.
Even after a 5-2 first round win, there wasn't cause for much celebration in the Wilmington High School locker room on Tuesday night. Friday night at Stoneham Arena, however, was a different story. "Last game we won, but back in the locker room it was like a loss. Everyone was not talking, down on themselves because we knew we played bad," said McDonough. "This game, we were celebrating because it was a good game and we knew we played well. But we can always build on our game." McDonough led the Wildcats with two goals in the quarterfinal round as Wilmington erased an early 1-0 deficit and went on to a 4-1 win. After Boston Latin led into the second period, McDonough tied things up, Dylan DiNatale put the locals ahead, Cam Owens added a …

The Wildcats 5-2 first round victory over Stoneham appeared to be an easy win, but it was a one-goal game for much of the third period.
Wilmington High School boys hockey head coach Steve Scanlon has seen a long list of impressive postseason victories in his decades with the team. Tuesday night, however, was not one of them. The Wildcats escaped their opening round tilt versus Stoneham with a 5-2 win, but the team didn't play well for much of the game and Wilmington's lead was only one goal for most of the final frame. Freshman Billy Falter, senior Jake Rogers and Dylan DiNatale scored to put Wilmington up, 3-0, after the opening period. But Stoneham scored the next two to pull within 3-2 with 13:30 to play. Goalie Drew Foley made a laundry list of critical saves to preserve the edge before Brendan McDonough added an empty netter with 26 seconds to play and Luke Foley …
