Biggest threat to kids in schools is a nut job with a bag full of weapons. Only way to have anyRead More successful defense against that is to have a select few teachers with weapons of their own that are willing to respond if such an incident were to happen. Throw them a little extra in the paycheck for the service they are providing. Much better to already have people on site ready to respond immediately and deal with the threat than to call police and wait 5 minutes for them to show, then another 5-10 minutes while they decide what to do and then end up just going in to clean up the mess when it is all done. The rest covered in the report is pretty basic and not sure why a committee had to be put together to discuss it.

Are you kidding Give teachers guns? I consider some of the teachers to be crazy.

Wait until the new arrivals from Guatemala are released from immigration detention and they findRead More their way to our schools. Did you hear of the new Lynn HS student. Gray hair, beard, does not speak a word of english? Not kidding folks. Just wait, your country is dying in front of your eyes.

Now the rapists and murderers and gang members from Ecuador and Guatemala will be unleashed on theRead More population of MA in the coming months thanks to open borders. These Illegal petri dishes will soon be bringing back diseases which were eradicated in the US till late. Starting in the schools and working their way into your living rooms in no time. THANK YOU MR. OAFBAMA! THANK YOU!

I'm glad to see more people are aware of Common Core and what comes with it. We could have debatedRead More the standards openly, like what was done during Ed Reform in the early 90s, but it was rushed through with minimal input and debate. The government pushed to add tons of strings to the standards (the testing (PARCC), teacher evalulations based on junk science of VAM, data mining of our children without our consent, waivers for No Child Left Behind), and no one who approved these standards for MA stopped and said...hhmmmmm, maybe we should find out what this costs or if these methods are proven. In fact, it is the opposite. I wish we could stop what is going on and have open and honest debate about the quality of the standards but the MA DESE seems bent on their agenda. Common Core Forum is working on stopping PARCC, creating legislation to stop Common Core and PARCC and help push education control back to local communities and parents. Look them up on Facebook and stay alert for current information, lobby days, and other meaningful agendas to help people across the state get us out from underneath Common Core and all of the strings.

If you think no one ever had a problem with the name you're full of it. (Of course I know you,Read More Deva, are just a racist troll). But yeah, it's not as bad as the n-word but probably about the equivalent of the word "coon" for an African-American. And let's not forget that the Redskins belong to an association that can probably make them do just about anything, as in the Donald Sterling case. Oh and anyone making Aaron Hernanadez jokes should probably just kill themselves.
brigara June 21, 2014 at 02:05 pm
The name is racist and just wrong to use. I understand the history and tradition associated with aRead More name and an organization but changing a name is about more than being PC. The National Congress of American Indians have made many statements of disapproval of the name. It is ok to reevaluate and recognize if something is in bad taste and in some cases to some it is a blatant slur. SD your comment, "Native Americans who lived on reservations wrote in to say they were NOT offended!" sounds like here say to me... I personally choose to listen to the words expressed by the collective governing boards over a few third hand opinions you might "know". I want to teach my children to respect other people and if a name for a team is disparaging or racist to a population then I want to listen to these people and respect that. I am sure we could all come up with a name that our students are worthy to wear on their shirts. This same organization has rallied to push for the change of these team names. Why do we not listen to them?? We should want our town and our children represented in the best way. I don't think with the team name we have now it represents us well at all. It actually seems quite ignorant to me to continue on with the name. http://www.changethemascot.org/ http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/redskins/2013/10/11/national-congress-american-indians-report-redskins-name/2965075/

If i lived in DC I'd register both the name and logo, which is now available, open up a bar &Read More grill called Washington Redskins. The specialties would include Red skinned potato salad, Red skinned french fries etc. The potential to make a bundle is there. I'd have a clothing line with the emblem on the front and menu on the back of every shirt. To hell with the NFL and all the moonbats. I'd love them to protest...free publicity...look at Chick fillet.

Federal government has to get out of the education business - we see how well they are handlingRead More healthcare (ACA/VA). Funding should not be tied to either the lunch programs or the 'Common Core' standards - (that are actually lower than what Massachusetts had in the first place). I agree schools should not be serving 'junk' but it should be up to each local DOE. Believe me if there is an issue the parents will make it known.

We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. So it isn't that college degrees are worthless, some are. It is also said that sometimes trade school is the right choice! This is an object lesson in Liberal/Progressive HYPOCRACY. The Left continuously propagandizes theRead More 'War on Women'. Hardly a day goes by when Obama or Reid don't spout that bogus, nonsenseical claim. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The REAL war on women comes from Sharia Law. Ms. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has seen it's horrors FIRST HAND. But the ostriches of the Progressive Left don't WANT TO HEAR things that go against their world view. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Exactly the same thing applies to the kidnapped school kids, to be sold as sex slaves, by Islamic Radicals. The Twitter campaign by 'celebs' and the beautiful people, like Michelle Obama, is simply ludicrous. Calling a radical terrorist a pussycat, does NOT make it a pussycat... no matter HOW hard you wish it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And now, the NYT, the self-proclaimed paper of record, and a Progressive stronghold, has outed it's first woman Editor. I'd bet she now has a lot of things to say about the REAL war on women.... FROM THE LEFT

We need to get the Washington bureaucrats out of the education business! All they are good for isRead More too make things more bureaucratic and to serve their own needs and agendas. It's tough enough dealing with local and state bureaucrats. Get rid of the federal DOE! Remember that "Common Core" means mediocrity. Mass doesn't need it!

The key to winning is to give people something to fight FOR. In Massachusetts, it's MCAS. MCAS hasRead More raised our state to tops in the world, not just the US. As a parent, I want the best for my children - let me fight to keep MCAS. See the psychology of it?
Wind Dummy 25 May 25, 2014 at 08:11 pm
Myron gets it. Imagine all those hacks who are likely out of their fields, forming curriculum? ThisRead More can't be good. Back to parent teacher principle vice principle and neighbors with kids leading the way in appropriate discussions. Not more radom studies that categorize students and eat recourses.

This “List of Shame” is yet another ploy by the BIG-Govt Obama Cartel to force collegesRead More to hire more campus cops, - more trauma counselors, - and to pay for more abortions. In other words, this is more wealth redistribution, - more govt jobs, - more Democratic votes. Their report DID NOT include the common-sense idea of making rape a mandatory 30-year no-parole sentence.

I guess colleges and Universities is where the real war on women is being raged!

WHS is a nice school, it is by far not one of the top. The AP classes are basic, standard. I'veRead More talked with co-workers in other towns, towns on that list. They offer a greater amount of AP classes, a wider variety of classes and they start earlier, some freshman and sophomore year. There are no advanced classes in earlier grades, no way to push kids who have the ability, so that by the time they are in high school, even the kids who were pretty smart lose some of that and fall in with the rest. I never felt this town pushes kids higher, that it is just happy to have them all in the middle. I always pushed my kids, and sometimes felt I was fighting against the administration rather than with it. My kids are in college now and are frustrated when they talk with other kids who had taken such a variety of classes, classes that aren't taught here. It's a shame really. I think the town is nice, and that it is happy being mediocre.
Joanne Benton's replacement may be named Thursday night.

Isn't it also an option that they can return to the drawing board and keep looking for a betterRead More candidate? I'm sure each of these candidates have skills- but they are not the backgrounds I am looking fro as an educator who will lead our new school district-and will be hiring number of new principals right out of the gate. I would like to see someone with proven experience in raising academic standards, addressing special education concerns, bringing in grants and community partnerships and changing school culture. I hope other speak up, or get what you get and don't get upset. Anyone?

I personally think Mary DeLai will be a great fit for Wilmington. I hope we sign her before sheRead More decides to go elsewhere. Also, I must admit that I am very disappointed that they didn't renew the North's principal contract. Why would we let such a great person go?

Unfortunately, we've become a society where too many do not understand boundaries. I don't thinkRead More it's appropriate for school staff to "friend" student's - there are "rules" that outline appropriate and inappropriate behaviors with students ... unfortunately, everyone thinks that what matters is being "buddies" with the kids ... too many professionals have forgotten how to be professional ...
