The Wilmington Police Department works to protect and serve the community in a number of ways. A team of 48 committed men and women, the Wilmington police began in 1872 with the appointment of a special police officer. Today the department has a K-9 unit, a detective bureau and an auxiliary unit. It takes pride in its strong connection with the community's youth and school system. The WPD also offers crime-prevention and safety programs like self-defense classes and CPR as well as animal control services.
