Proper Training has BIG Rewards!

The importance of proper training for athletes

The realm of competitive sports no longer belongs only to the collegiate and professional athlete. Increasingly, adolescents are being required to engage in intensive training programs to enhance sport capabilities, much of this training with unqualified individuals. Training safely and properly requires academically trained and certified professionals with an understanding of proper injury prevention techniques as well as proper growth and development biomechanics. Understanding these points is what differentiates strength and conditioning from sport coaching.

BODYMECHANIX program director, Douglas White, MSPT, L/ATC, CSCS sees a marked increase in the number of sport related injuries in adolescents and younger children.  He attributes this to the fact that children are becoming engaged in organized sports at a younger age. “Some simply start too young and their bodies aren’t ready for the physical stresses put on them. This can lead to more serious injuries as the athlete enters high school and collegiate sports,” asserts Doug.

While some injuries may be caused by stresses at a young age, White contends that an increasing number of injuries among high school and collegiate athletes are due to a lack of adequate strength and conditioning training.  “Most sport training focuses on positional play, sport specific drills and strategy.  While all these are necessary, it is equally important to develop the eight components of strength and conditioning to maximize fitness levels and minimize overuse and sport related injuries,” states Doug.

Strength and conditioning training is proven to increase flexibility, aerobic endurance, muscle endurance, strength, power, speed, balance and agility. All eight components are necessary to help significantly reduce the possibility of injury and to improve an athlete’s abilities. White maintains, “If young athletes learn how to train properly, they can learn the skills and techniques necessary not only to help them excel on the field of play, but to help them gain confidence and maintain a physically fit lifestyle. This will become increasingly important as the athlete ages.”

Doug partners with parents, coaches, and athletes to offer sport specific training in all sports. “By offering athletes the opportunity to push their limits on such things as speed, balance, and strength, they can begin to realize just how their bodies respond in competitive situations,” quotes Doug. The BODYMECHANIX training program includes free pre and post performance tests to measure each athlete’s success.  The testing and training focus on all eight components of proper conditioning.
