Mass Turnpike Weekend Lane Restrictions Through Boston Start This Weekend

What you need to know about getting into the city and to the airport the next four weekends.

Motorists should be aware of traffic impacts stemming from four weekend lane restrictions on the Massachusetts Turnpike that support the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority’s project to remove the ceiling of the Prudential Tunnel. The first weekend of these restrictions starts Friday, March 21.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the restrictions will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on the Massachusetts Turnpike through the Pru Tunnel on the following weekends beginning at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday:

Traffic congestion during daylight hours is expected to be significant on the Turnpike in Boston in both directions, MassDOT officials say. This will also impact traffic on surrounding roadways in the Back Bay and the Charles River roads.

Traffic will also likely back up onto I-93 south and north of Boston. Because of this, MCCA and MassDOT are advising drivers not heading to a specific destination in Boston to use I-95/Rte. 128 to reach points south and north of Boston on these weekends.

If you’re headed to Logan Airport, MassDot is advising drivers to use the Callahan Tunnel or approach Logan via Rte. 16 to Rte. 1A. Travelers may also wish to consider using public transportation during these weekend periods.

Along with delays, motorists entering the work zone, where the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph, should expect to encounter entrance and exit ramp closures and detours in this area during the project. Further details are available on the project website at www.prutunnelproject.info.

To maintain two-way traffic along the Turnpike during the project, traffic will be shifted to two contra-flow lanes on the opposite side of the roadway. For example, when I-90 westbound lanes are closed inside the Prudential Tunnel, westbound traffic will be directed to the eastbound side of I-90, where there will be two lanes of bi-directional traffic. During the eastbound closure, there will be two lanes provided on the westbound side of I-90.
