Wilmington Preparing for Annual Relay for Life

Residents still have time to donate to the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life is returning to Wilmington, and opening night is now less than a month away.

The town's sixth annual Relay for Life benefitting the American Cancer Society will take place on Friday, June 20, at 5:30 p.m. at Wilmington Middle School.

An overnight fundraiser, Relay for Life provides participants to walk throughout the night while also enjoying food, entertainment and other activities.

Teams camp out in tents and take turns walking at all times during the night, a metaphor because cancer never sleeps.

Visitors to the event are likely to see teams of residents dressed in colorful costumes. There will be opening remarks to kick off the event, and then the fun gets underway.

So far, a pair of Wilmington teams have already reached special medal status for their fundraising efforts. The Unstoppables, led by Joe Martiniello, and Ken's Friends and Family, led by Patricia Rauseo, are the two teams to reach that level.

One way residents can still contribute to the event is donating to buy a luminaria bag. The white bags are decorated by a volunteer or the person donating. A candle is then set inside and lit in honor or memory of loved ones.

Residents can also show their support in person. The Relay for Life is open to the public on June 20.
