Wilmington residents have had the chance to see Michael Caira in action as Town Manager for more than two decades. On Friday, they’ll have the chance to see what skills he has on the pitcher’s mound.
Caira will throw out the first pitch at tonight’s Lowell Spinners game as part of the festivities for Wilmington Day at LeLacheur Park, which begins with a dinner at 5:30 p.m. for those who purchased tickets through the Rotary Club and Chamer of Commerce.
“I don’t really know what to expect from Mike’s first pitch,” said Chamber of Commerce President Mike Champoux. “Though I didn’t know him back then, I’ve heard that he was quite the athlete in his younger days. I suspect it’ll make it over home plate.”
In addition to Caira’s pitch, the will be acknowledged, and town organizations from town will be recognized on the scoreboard.
Champoux said the teamwork between the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce, two organizations with no ties to one another, was impressive in the planning of Wilmington Day.
“I like what this represents with two organizations teaming up for on common goal,” said Champoux. “It’s just about getting people out and active through these organizations with no goal other than a sense of community in mind.”
More than 100 tickets were sold through the Wilmington organizations. Residents who did not buy the tickets in advance are invited to attend the game and support the town by buying tickets at the park.
In addition to Wilmington Day, it is also Friday the 13th and in honor of the day, author Stephen King will be in attendance. The first 1,500 fans through the gate will receive a Stephen King bobble head doll.
“I can foresee more town groups getting together like this in the future to plan events, and if that occurs you can just imagine how much good can happen,” said Champoux, who joked that he may track down King to see if he’s interested in finding out more about Wilmington. “I’m not sure exactly what connection we could make with Stephen King and Wilmington, but I’m sure we could always try to convince him to make a trip to town.”
