Wilmington Superintendent Announces Retirement

Wilmington Superintendent Joanne Benton announced her retirement to Wilmington schools staff on Monday.

With Wilmington students heading back to school on Tuesday, it came as a surprise when Superintendent Joanne Benton announced her retirement to staff on Monday, the first day of school for Wilmington teachers.

Benton told Wilmington Patch she would be submitting a formal letter with her intention to School Committee in the coming months.

"I announced that this would be my last opening day speech and that I would be submitting a letter to school committee in the coming months," Benton said.

While no official date has been set for Benton's retirement to take effect, Benton's address to Wilmington schools staff indicates it will come before the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Benton said she felt the first day of school for teachers was an appropriate time to thank the staff of Wilmington schools for their hard work.

"I wanted to tell the staff how much I appreciate them and their devotion to the students of Wilmington," Benton said.
