A North Intermediate School custodian is being lauded for his efforts in aiding a student who was choking during a lunch period last week.

Mike Scanlon saw a teacher run from the cafeteria to get the school nurse, and then observed nine-year-old Daevin Harless in distress, according to a report from the Wilmington Town Crier.

When he got to Harless, Scanlon said the boy's face was pale, according to the Town Crier.

Scanlon immediately began administering the Heimlich maneuver, and successfully dislodged the carrots from Harless' throat, according to the Town Crier.
