Report: School Fees Rising, But Not in Wilmington

According to a report in the Lowell Sun, Wilmington is in the minority when it comes to school fees in the area.

Though low revenues and increased costs have forced many towns in the area to increase school fees, Wilmington is among the few towns who buck that trend, according to a Lowell Sun report.

In towns like Chelmsford and Tyngsboro, students must pay $300 for their first sport in addition to other lesser fees for additional teams they join, the newspaper reports.

But according to The Sun, the fees don't end there. Dracut charges $200 for bus transportation, Westford charges $225 for the same service, and some middle and elementary students must pay for clubs and activities, the report says.

Wilmington, on the other hand, joins schools like Lowell, Greater Lowell Technical High School, Nashoba Valley Technical High School and Shawsheen Technical High School who do not charge fees.

"There's been no need to charge for athletics for anything," director of administration and finance for the Wilmington schools Paul Ruggiero told The Sun. "The community is very proud of that fact."
