New Wilmington High School One Year From Opening

Superintendent of Schools Joanne Benton noted the countdown is on in a memo to high school staff.

At times, it has seemed like the finish line was miles away. But for town and school officials, the end is in site.

As of Monday, the opening of the new Wilmington High School is officially less than one year away.

Superintendent of Schools Joanne Benton said in a memo to high school staff members that Monday marked 365 days until doors open at the long discussed and debated school.

Despite several unsuccessful appeals by opponents, the school construction is well underway. In recent months the gym has been demolished and the new structure is beginning to take shape.

"All I can say is what a difference a year makes," Benton told Patch on Monday. "This is very exciting. It is a dream come true."
