Wilmington Updates From The Polls

This is where we will update you on what's happening in Wilmington throughout Election Day, so check back for the latest.

9:35 a.m.: Now is almost the time Town Clerk Sharon George said would be ideal to vote if you are able to. During our Election Day preview, George told Patch that there could be an 80 percent turnout in town and that voters should expect lines on Tuesday, especially during peak hours.

11:09 a.m.: There is a steady flow of cars coming in and out of the Wildwood School parking lot, something Democratic Town Committee chairman Gary DePalma said has been happening all morning.

"It’s the most people I’ve seen at an election in a long time," said DePalma. "I got here at about 6:30 this morning and the parking lot was already full. It's showing democracy at its best right now. People are taking it seriously. It’s great ot see people out voting. To see them coming out like they are today, it’s just great for society as a whole."

11:46 a.m.: At Boutwell School, there has been plenty of parking and according to Wilmington Patch readers a short line.

"I just voted and there is no line at the Boutwell School, it's busy, but no waiting," said Steve Davis on the Wilmington Patch Facebook page.

Ashley Hill commented that she voted this morning at 7:30 a.m. and joked that it took her more time to fill out the bubbles than it did to vote. Reader Cindy Morang's precinct was at Town Hall, where she ran into just one problem.

"Voted at 10:30, In and out in 10 minutes," she wrote. "My only complaint - parking at Town Hall. More cars then people who were voting."

1:20 p.m.: Both Rep. Jim Miceli and challenger Doug Sears were just at Boutwell School, with Miceli logging his vote at his home princinct.

"Look at me. I'm calm as can be," said Miceli. "I'll admit there's a little feeling of being glad when the outcome arrives and the votes are tallied. The first machine gives you an indication of how things are going to go."

Miceli said nothing can duplicate the feeling he hopes to have again tonight - coming out victorious in an election.

"If I smoked, then I'd light up a cigar," said Miceli.

As for Sears, he said he's seen a great deal of support for Scott Brown around the area, something he believes bodes well for him.

"I like my chances a lot," said Sears. "I think there will be a Republican surge throughout the Merrimack Valley, and I hope to be a part of it."

2:34 p.m.: For Town Clerk Sharon George, all is well so far.

George said that as of 2 p.m., 6,241 Wilmington residents have voted, about 40 percent of eligible voters.

"I hope it continues to go smoothly. All of the election workers are doing a great job," said George. "We've had a few little glitches, but we've worked through them. You always know you're going to have glitches during an election."

The Town Clerk said the biggest issue has been with residents who have been deleted because they haven't voted in several years or did not fill out their census, but they come to the polls thinking they're registered.

Turnout has been a little busier than George expected, and she believes the town will see up to 13,000 ballots cast. She has received 1,205 absentee ballots, which will be counted after polls close.

4:50 p.m.: As of 4 p.m., the total number of votes has spiked up to 7,901, according to Sharon George. That is good for a total of 56 percent of registered voters.

George said things are starting to pick up significantly and crowds are growing.

7:29 p.m.: With 30 minutes to go before polls close, Wilmington has seen outstanding turnout.

According to the Town Clerk's office, as of 7 p.m. a total of 11,057 ballots have been cast. That is equal to 70 percent of registered voters, with a bit more time still to go.

9:19 p.m.: Rep. Jim Miceli is expected to arrive at Rocco's momentarily. According to early reports, he is winning in a landslide over Doug Sears.

In Tewksbury, he won by a wide margin and in Precinct 1 of Wilmington, Miceli earned a 1,616-414 win. More to come.

Sen. Scott Brown (R), Elizabeth Warren (D): U.S. Senate

Scott Brown has represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate since a January 2010 special election held to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy. Brown defeated state Attorney General Martha Coakley with 1,168,107 votes, or 51.9 percent, to her 1,058,682 votes, or 47.1 percent.

U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D), Richard Tisei (R): 6th Congressional District

Tierney is the incumbent but he is a new face to Tewksbury voters. Until now, Tewksbury had been part of Niki Tsongas' 5th District. But with redistricting, the town has been shifted to the 6th District as of Jan. 1. In 2010, Tierney defeated Republican challenger Bill Hudak, 57-43 percent. Tisei is a former State Senator from Wakefield. He ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor in 2010 as Charlie Baker's running mate. Despite losing by a wide margin statewide, the Baker/Tisei GOP ticket defeated Gov. Deval Patrick and Tim Murray in 2010 in Tewksbury by more than 8,000 votes.

State Rep. Jim Miceli (D), Doug Sears (R): Mass. House 19th Middlesex District

Rep. Jim Miceli, D- Wilmington, has served in the State Legislature for 38 years. Challenger Doug Sears is the vice chair of the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen and has also served on the School Committee. In 2010, Miceli thumped Mario Marchese, and won Tewksbury by more than 2,000 votes.

Ken Gordon (D), Walter Zenkin (R): Mass. House of Representatives 21st Middlesex District

Gordon and Zenkin will vie for the former seat of State Rep. Charlie Murphy who will vacate his seat at the end of this term. Gordon is a Bedford resident, Vice-Chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals and an attorney. Zenkin is a Burlington Selectmen.
