Wilmington Woman's Car Explodes in Stoneham

According to WBZ-TV, Jackie Sugrue's keyless entry device triggered a large explosion in the parking lot of the Stoneham BJ's Wholesale.

According to WBZ-TV, a woman's shopping trip didn't end as planned on Sunday after her remote key triggered a massive explosion in Stoneham.

At about 3:45 p.m., Jackie Sugrue, who the Lowell Sun reported is a Wilmington resident, was walking to her car when she used her remote key to pop her trunk and unlock the doors. Sugrue told the news station that her car immediately exploded all over the parking lot.

No one was injured during the incident, which Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said was caused by a leak in a tank that was in the car.

"There was a leak in the acetylene tank that caused the explosion based upon the transmittal of the remote," Coan said, according to WBZ-TV.

Though the incident destroyed Sugrue's car, it could have been worse considering there was another drive just feet away during the explosion.

"My trunk went flying over this whole row of cars into the next row,” Sugrue told WBZ-TV. "It could have turned out really bad.”

Thank God she was far enough away from the car when it happened!

Why did she have an acetylene tank in her trunk? What, did she just run out to the store for some bread, milk, and welding equipment? Did she even have the tank secured? Or was it just rolling around back there, waiting to explode? "It could have turned out really bad," is the understatement of the year.

From what I can recall from the TV reports, the car in question was a Honda Civic (although that had nothing to do with the explosion). The woman's boyfriend had his welding equipment in the trunk. Apparently when she opened the trunk with her remote, it created a tiny electrical spark which in turn set off the explosion with the tank. Thankfully no one was hurt. But this will be an interesting one to tell the insurance company!
